I received this email today:

Dear SBC Internet Services Member*:

SBC Internet Services (SBCIS) is proud to offer its members free access to SCAN - the Secure Cops Alert Network. SCAN, the first national alert system of its kind, allows local police departments and public safety agencies to broadcast emergency information directly to your computer, cell phone or other web-connected devices. SCAN can immediately alert you of criminal activity in your neighborhood, such as burglaries, thefts, and vandalism. Other alerts include weather, health advisories, cyber attacks, fire, sexual predators moving into the area, etc.

SBCIS is making SCAN available to it members at no charge for one year. There is nothing to buy and no commitment. At the end of one year, if you take no action to continue the service, it will simply be discontinued at no cost to you.

For more information and to register, please visit: http://www.scanusa.com

Sincerely,

SBC Internet Services

I'm not sure what to make of it. It seems likea good service to have, and hell, it's free for one year. Here's the fine print:

After the first year, you may obtain a second year of membership to SCAN, at no cost, by purchasing any product or SBC products or services, via the SCAN website at http://www.scanusa.com Or, you may elect to sign up for a paid membership via the SCAN website. Either way, no commitment is required to receive the first year of alerts free of charge. SCAN Alerts provided by SCANUSA Corporation and subject to SCAN Terms and Conditions.

Does anyone have experience with this or have any ideas about it? I'm considering signing up for the free year.

Reminds me of the existing Emergecy Broadcast System in place for public notices through TV and radio. Seems like a natural progression to include the internet. I wonder if EBS has thought about an internet off-shoot of their own? I always question the validity of the alert and who's REALLY issuing it. At first glance it seems okay.
