As for me, I am a dabbler. I know a little about a lot of things. I really cannot call myself an expert in anything.
I'm an expert in Contra:Shattered Soldier for PS2. (No seriously, S scores on levels.) I'm an expert of experts at the paper-tossing flash game that was posted here a while ago. I'm good but not great at other video games.

well, I certainly understand the chemistry of cooking, but that doesn't mean you'll like the taste of everything I make. but I do think about thermodynamic properties (heats of fusion) and solubility curves when I cook. i don't know if it makes my food any better, but i enjoy the process.
i experiment and have fun cooking, but I have no formal culinary education like I do chemistry education.

In terms of finance I would put myself up against pretty much anyone. Wait, finance it too broad make that financial markets. (MBA specializing in financial markets and investment as well as a CFA Charter. Background in investment banking, M&A, portfolio management)
It is tough to call myself an expert in swordsmanship because I train with many people who are better but in the grand scheme of things I know more than 99.9% of those out there.

i wish i was a star wars geek. i thought i was... until i got the star wars trivial pursuit game. damn. i suck at it.
I wish I had better in linguistics. I love to travel and find that my pathetic ability with languages holds me back.
i'm really good at picking up language, but by no means an expert... just travel more (heh, good advice i'd give to anyone for any reason), and don't be afraid to make a fool of yourself... it'll come. :)
i was really impressed with myself because we were watching dances with wolves the other night, and i started to pick apart the syntax of lakota... i was really excited, and as i was pointing out what i had gleaned from the dialogue to prm (the way things are inflected at the beginning of the word rather than the end, very similar to some african languages, how highly inflected it is overall, the way the verb almost always goes at the end of the sentence, etc...) he started sniffing my hair. i asked him wtf he was doing, and he said he just wanted to figure out what i was smoking.
so, that's how impressed certain others are with my expertise... bah.
Well I do try to be a jack of most trades...
i've actually been trying to NOT be a jack of all trades lately... i really want to get very, very good at a few things. the problem is narrowing down my wide interests and choosing what those few things will be... mandolin over violin? but wait... i have a viola, too! (tho prm is busy tryin to bogart it...)
then i see how people who get too far into something jsut start getting silly... like, i'm into fly-fishing... but not like some people are. honestly, it's not somethign i could do every day for 9 months of the year. and it's not something i want to spend a whole lot of time thinking about... i'd much rather try a fly 3-4 times, and try a different fly when that one doesn't work, than spend three frikkin hours the night before watching bugs hatch and discussing the water temperature and speculating on tomorrows weather and the advantages of taupe hackle versus beige hackle to tie the PERFECT fly for tomorrow... sheesh.
maybe i'm abck to jsut wanting to be a "jack of all trades, master of none" again. better than being a complete dork :P

Oh don't worry, I'll make a fool out of myself at the drop of a hat. :D I still go and I still try. Just wish I had an aptitude for it.
My problem is that while I'm extremely knowledgeable about a lot of things, I lack practical experience in many of them to put that knowledge to use. I'm book-smart, but not experience-smart. By that measure, I guess the only thing I'm truly an expert on is troubleshooting computers.
Areas I'd like to work on are automotive engines, renewable energy, and American history - specifically, the Revolution, biographies of the founding fathers, the war of 1812, and the New Deal reforms put forth by FDR. I've been studying the history of the American space program lately too, along with the Soviet space activities of the time. Not quite an expert yet, but I want to one day be able to call myself a space historian. :)

that's why becoming an expert in beer is so fun. i read a lot about beer and while I'm reading, I drink a good beer or two. get the book smarts and the experience all at the same time. then take a nap to sleep off the alcohol.

In my profession as an electrical engineer, I have done many things and I have become damn good at them. I have never spent too much time specializing in one field of EE to the point of pigeon-holing myself in that area forever. The funny thing about technology is that it is always moving forward which means you are always learning in my field.
My current fields of expertise include communications systems using fiber optics, microwave, coaxial/twisted-pair copper, etc. I also know a quite a bit obout sensors and data aquisition. I also know quite a bit about Digital Signal Processing and Integrated Circuits (computer chip design) though I never really got into those fields.
I know a lot about home construction and carpentry, electrical wiring, carpet installation and floor tile. I also know a lot about horses and raising cattle too.

NICU nurses are, hands-down, some of the best nurses out there ;) seems like you have to be top of your game to even be considered for a position. there are some truly dumb people who make it through nursing school... but they don't make it to the NICU. i swear, if any of the nurses in the NICU had been even the least bit as incompetent as some of the other nurses i've encountered, i would have started biting off ears.

Here Here... A fraternal brother in the midst! The World of Magic is truly a brotherhood. Myself, a student and performer since age 11. Began with escapology, then parlor, close-up, stage and now Theatrical Hypnosis... Hypnosis Rules!... "My dear, your clothes are becoming warmer and warmer... very, very warm... with every breath you take and every word I say, they're becoming warmer still... uncomfortably warm...almost hot!... so very uncomfortable that you feel as though they MUST be removed... you MUST remove your..."...UH Hum... anyway. My brother and I performed professionally together for many years. Brett's actually more accomplished than myself IMO. At 13, he was selected as one of 5 young performers to become a Jr. member of the prestigious "Magic Castle" in Hollywood... 400 auditioned that year, and he remains the YOUNGEST magician to have ever been chosen as a member. Dirk Arthur and Mark Kalin (Vegas Acts), were among those also chosen that year. Me? I chickened out... had the talent, didn't have the Huevos :gle: . I regret it to this day.
Houdini, if you're ever around L.A. and want to go to "The Castle", I'll hook you up. Brett knows everybody... Lance, David, The Pendragons and many more. Nice to know you're a part of this community!
Soooo, I'm proficient in showmanship, misdirection, prestidigitation and legerdemain... Also real estate investments, analysis, zoning, development and construction. All supported by a strong background in sales.
And, I'm definitely deficient in the understanding and use of this machine. I've just recently discovered a love of computing and cyberspace; and I thirst for more knowledge in this regard. My understanding of innerspace (the mind and final frontier), is vast... My understanding of cyberspace (this world and a truly new frontier), needs work. This is why I come HERE often.
