I bought this (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-152-031&depa=0) NEC drive from Newegg. I've yet to burn a single coaster. I'm very pleased with it.

the nec 3500 is great, if you go to cdfreaks.com many people have great things to say about it. I use it and have burned close to 200 dvd's without error.
edited to say that i agree with above post. I purchased mine from pcmicrostore.com but they are very similarly priced.

The above mentioned burners are great brands. I personally have a Lite-On Dual Layer DVD+-/RW and have yet to turn out a coaster. They have a great deal on this burner on Newegg.com

Pioneer all the way!! I could burn 4x discs at 16x using the Nil's firmware...
brainsmile
01-01-2005, 09:32 PM
what is Nil's firmware ?
Delta I emailed you did you get it?

Here you can download the Unoffcial firmware for Pioneer DVR-108 by NIL from http://gradius.rpc1.org/DVR-108D%20into%20DVR-108DX.zip, This firmware allows the burner to burn 4x or 8x Discs at 16x... I dont have any problems or errors after burning using 16x.. you can also check gradius.rpc1.org for other Pioneer DVD writer firmwares...
I never receive emailfrom G|A for some reason and it goes to spam folder and gets trashed... so the best way for you guys to contact me is by AIM @ Josh64FX

I got in on the PC Connection deal on this burner - $40.00 or so A/R (posted here 12/26). Been on the road this week but will install it next week when I get back home...

sony is way overpriced. and if u want, you can always just buy a maddog or something for 50 or 60, and its the same speed. they dont last as long though
brainsmile

well I like that you can overburn them. Pioneer isn't so bad. I bought a few NEC drives at $39 and sold them on ebay for at least $60 so the pioneer becomes free :)

Some Sonys are rebadged Lite-Ons.

I'm getting that Pioneer DVR-108 after getting a Samsung TS-H552B for Christmas. I'm sending the Samsung back because it wouldn't read the cdr's I have. Bleh. Apparently it's very media brand sensitive. And I've heard nothing but rave reviews about the Pioneer. So... :)
Got anyplace cheaper than $87 at meritline?
AlpineJay

ZipZoomFly has the white one for 80 shipped, and black for 81 shipped.
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductList.jsp?ThirdCategoryCode=010713&SortBy=B&Brand=PIONEER
They are just bare drives, though. But it looks like the one from Meritline is too so ZZF seems like your best bet. I love those guys.

Bare drives = Just the drive only - no IDE cables (not that they're worth a lot), software, manuals, etc. Basically what you're missing is the software package which oftentimes is subpar. Retail version for this drive, if one exists, will go for another 20 or 30 bucks more.
_=DeltaForce=_
01-03-2005, 06:50 PM
Yeah all u need is a IDE cable and you are ready to go...
The reason I m recommending Pioneer is becauase an unofficial firmware makes 4x disc burn at 16x...
Jenny
01-03-2005, 07:17 PM
hehe Hubby said he'd hurt me if I used an unofficial firmware. ;) So... :D

does anyone know what the differences between the nec nd-3500a and the nd-3520a are besides the 3520 being able to write to a dvd+rw faster? is the 3520 just a replacement for the 3500?
also, how hard is it to burn video files (i.e. avi, wmv) and make the dvd playable in regular dvd players?
brainsmile

in a separate thread someone was saying that the pioneer doesn't play on an apex dvd player. Is this true?
