Heh, interesting disclaimer they're putting on these now:

The PowerEdge SC420 is ideal for your first server & network.
Note: For server use only; CANNOT BE USED AS A DESKTOP.
Dell does not support the use of a graphics card on the SC420.

I'm guessing they're getting a lot of calls on them. I still recommend it as an entry level desktop machine.

I have 2 of them and working great. The reason they say that it is server only, is because there is no available video driver for the onboard video for XP(but it still works fine.)

I take it there is no AGP, just PCI, right? Will an aftermarket PCI video card work in this? I might pick one up as my xmas present.

I bought one less than a year ago. It has an Intel I875 chipset motherboard with 8X AGP. It runs XP Pro great, is very quiet and stable. Unless they have changed the design radically, it makes a great platform.

You bought a 400SC, 420SC has PCI Express and no AGP.

It has PCIe. See the second link in kcrilly's original post (at the top of the page).

The PCIe in the 420SC is an 8x version, which needs modification to work with the 16x PCIe video cards. :D

I had the 400SC for a while and it's a great computer. I sold that to my uncle and got the 8300.

I ordered one this morning but was late for work so I couldnt post the deal... It seems to be a good system for that price.

You are correct, my mistake on that.

This has one pcie slot that can be modded to use a pcie card. You can also use one of the 3 pci slots for a video card, or use use the onboard video, but there isnt a driver for the video card, as of yet. :)

The 8x pcie is easy to mode with a hot butter knife, so your 16x card will fit. But this is not something you need to do, as I said before you can use the onboard video, or get a pci video card. I have 2 of these working great. I used an old SB live value card and bought a cheap dvd rw drive and have about 280 in this computer minus my x800 that I really didnt need. :D

Gotta love dell for there cheap computers.

Argh... I just do not know what to do. I really don't need one of these, but I can throw the P4 in it and upgrade to 80GB drive and it comes out to only $360 including taxes. Then I can get a PCIe card and some memory at my leisure. I am good with a butterknife and I already have a method worked out in my head on how to remove the spacers without messing the thing up.

I guess I do a lot of Photoshop work, and I design levels for Unreal... so I could justify that. Yeah..... :naughty:

Edit: just ordered... what the hell. :wavey2:

I got one. I upgraded with 512MB, 160GB and the 2.8GHz P4. I'm probably one of the few that actually plans on using this as a server!

NOOOOOOO!!!!! I just ordered last night!!! I have to call them to see what they can do! ^&%%%$#% :throw:

Yeah, the exact system that I ordered but with 512MB instead of 256MB is $10 cheaper. ARGH. Must call now.

Just got off the phone. They went ahead and cancelled the old order and re-ordered it for me so I get the RAM and it was $15 less now. This did push my ship date, but that is fine!

Thanks to kcrilly for updating us with the new deal.

I see that they are offering SCSI drives as an option. Does this server have onboard SCSI capability?

Jeffbx
12-22-2004, 01:10 PM
No, in order to choose the SCSI drives you need to add a $199 controller.

I called to get a partial refund because mine is 256 ram, and they only offered a $50 coupon code... I told them Id rather see them in hell! Im sending it back and reordering.

do you think if I called again and got a different rep, they might offer the $100 chargeback?

kcrilly

I would try a different call. Never know what a rep will do to help you. :)

I agree, call again. Sometimes you will get someone that will go the extra mile for you.

BTW- Mine arrived today, the correct order with the 512MB of RAM.

Ok, well I get back from vacation at work and they left 2 separate messages on my phone to urgently call them back to see if they could convince me not to return the server...
I called and accepted a $100 coupon off anything, she almost cried when I asked for $100 chargeback, so I took the coupon... Im too soft.

I've got an X700 Pro card in there now, my framerate in WoW doesn't drop under 40. :) It wasn't easy though, hot butter knife wasn't good enough, used a box cutter with a new titanium blade. Much more exact as well as easier. Total cost was just under $500 shipped, including OS/video card.
2.8 P4 800 bus
512 ram
80 gb sata hd
x700 pro video card
XP Pro

Heres a good deal if you are looking for a dual xeon capable comp with the same kind of pci slot. The 3 gig xeon is almost worth as much as they are selling the whole computer. The computer case is based off of the dell xps series.

Its +$599 to add the second processor bumping the total to $1123...

...plus I'm almost positive that the SC1420 only has PCI graphics - no PCIe or AGP. At least that was true of the 1400SC, so I'm assuming it carries over to the 1420.

*edit* OOPS - nope, I'm wrong - I just checked the system documentation. Here's the MB diagram:

http://home.comcast.net/~jeff_bowden/pics/sc1420.jpg

HHHHMmmmmmmmm - that's a sweet deal for a dual capable 3GHz Xeon system! There's 4HD bays in there, too.

kcrilly

It has the same slot as the sc420. You can cut it and go. I have one working. Plus get the extra free heat sink for an ebay purchase of an oem proc. I love my systems :D

Most dual xeon mobos are $300 to $400.
