I'm not ashamed to admit that I took great pride in the fact my 10 year old son did not know what the F-word was. Honestly, he'd never heard it and had no clue what it was. He only knew it was *really* *really* bad and started with an F.
He recently informed me his 17 year old brother told him it rhymed with duck.
I don't think he was convinced when I told him the F-word was "Firetruck".
At least he made it to his 10th birthday. Fortunately, his twin sister is still blissfully ignorant.

actually, i went to a Catholic school, and walked to school so
no-learning-from-the-older-kids schoolbus rides, and i didn't know of the F-bomb until i was 11 and got accused of saying it on the playground. i got dragged into Mother Superior's office where she proceeded to tell me over and over that i had a disgusting mouth. i had no idea what she was talking about. she didn't explain herself at all. i honestly thought she meant i didn't brush my teeth or something.
so i go home crying cause i got bawled out and tell my Mom about it. she calls the convent and speaks to Mother Superior who tells her the exact word i was accused of saying (by a classmate who had it in for me for some reason). my mother tells me "the word" and that was the first time i heard it.

It's okay to know it but hopefully he doesn't start using it at this young age.
I didn't learn about the "F" word until I was 15 because that was when I came to the US and learned about it. :D I used it a lot when I was in the military.
I learn the Vietnamese version when I was 12. I definitely used it in every other sentence during junior high and high school.

I learned to curse pretty early. I learned not to curse when the parents were around shortly thereafter. I cursed a lot on the playground or wherever the adults weren't. It pissed them off when I did it, but all the adults did it, so I guessed it must have been mature and cool to do :D.

i was the same way as zen. then at like 14, dad goes 'i know you swear, i don't mind it, just don't use the 'f' word around me, and you sure as hell don't swear around your grandmother'

In Jr. High and High School, my buddies and I abused it. Every sentence included it. Seemed like you lacked communication skills if you failed to say it ALL the time. Then someone told me that using those sorts of words illustrated to others that you had a poor vocabulary and that you lacked communication skills. The thought of being perceived as a poor communicator effected me so drastically, that I dropped the foul mouth act right then and there... and F--K, I'm glad I did!

heh, i went to catholic school... and thus learned it much earlier than my public school counterparts :P
i know countless stories of kids who didn't know what the word meant, got tricked into saying it, or overheard it and innocently repeated it or asked an adult what it meant, and got in trouble for saying it even though they had no idea it was bad... seems like the kids who are innocent are more likely to get in trouble than the kids who know exactly what it means and why it gets used... pretty unfair, as are most things in childhood :P
ahhh, this topic leads me to a spin-off... deserving of its own thread, i think... ;) i should be done typing it up in 5-10 minutes or so...

I learned all my swear words when I was 7 years old and had moved to California. Apparently the kids in CA are more advanced in swearing then those in the midwest.

I learned the F word pretty early on, I realy really learned the quickest way to hell was saying the "C" word to a woman. I never have used that word to a woman, and never want to find out how she would kill me.

I hope my daughter makes it that long. Yesterday she said she got in trouble last friday at school for saying the "S"-word, when I asked her what the "S" word was she said "You know... Stupid." I have never been prouder :)
