World's smallest baby born in US

Rumaisa is expected to develop normally despite her tiny size
The world's smallest known surviving baby has made her first public appearance at a US hospital, alongside her slightly larger twin sister.

Rumaisa Rahman weighed just 244g (8.6 ounces) when she was born prematurely in Chicago on 19 September - less than a can of soft drink.

Rumaisa's Indian-born parents hope to take her and sister Hiba to their home in the city by early next month.

"It's a blessing, it's a great blessing," said the girls' mother.

Doctors had waited to announce the girls' birth until after it was clear they were healthy and were nearly ready to leave the hospital.

"They're maintaining their temperature, they don't need an incubator.... They're normal babies," said Dr William MacMillan at Loyola University Medical Center.

Rumaisa was about the size of a mobile phone when she was born, 15 weeks before her due date. She still only weighs 1.18kg (2 pounds 10 ounces).

Hiba weighed 563g (1 pound 4 ounces) at birth, and has now reached 2.25kg (5 pounds). She may leave the hospital by the end of the month, but Rumaisa will probably have to stay until early January.

Their mother, Mahajabeen Shaik, 23, developed severe pre-eclampsia, a disorder characterised by high blood pressure and other problems, during pregnancy. She and her husband, Mohammed Abdul Rahman, 32, are originally from Hyderabad, India.

The twins were delivered by Caesarean section at 25 weeks and six days.

Both girls have undergone laser surgery to correct vision problems that are common in premature babies.

dang, twins at 25 weeks. it's a miracle the smaller one survived.

they don't... need... an incubator?!?!??!!?!?

wow. i'm in tears. the recovery they have made is wonderful. babies born much later can be plagued by problems worse than these two have had! how scary, to be 23, pregnant, in a new country, and to have something as life-threatening as that happen... to be told that, if any of the three of you want to live, you need to remove your babies when their hopes of surivival, let alone a normal life, are so devastatingly low...

wow.

the one baby was about the size of a mobile phone, and weighed less than a soda can :heh:

for some reason, that description of size and weight just strikes me as really funny. i'm about to pull my phone out of my pocket and say "hello, baby."

that is amazing though. that is one tiny baby.

So weird. I work with a girl whose name is Rumaisa Rahman who lived in Chicago at one time...I sent her the link and she proceeded to send it to everybody she knew.

my cousin weighed 15 oz when he was born. he was considered a medical miracle to have made it and to have no issues common with preemies.
but 8.6 oz is truly truly amazing.

I'm always thrilled on a personal level when I hear about happy endings for preemies. :)

:heh:

you're toward the end of a long line of kids for her, tho, right? her own fault... babies get bigger and bigger when you just keep havin em. you should tell her that as you keep having them, your chances of having twins also skyrockets... she should jsut be grateful there weren't two of you :heh:

you are 20 rumaisas! :heh:

Actually, I'm the messed up middle kid. My mom had a couple more after me (luckily all of whom were smaller at birth than me). And yes... her, me and the rest of the world are grateful there aren't two of me. The thought that there is even one of me out there sometimes keeps me up at night. :)
