The simplified answer is yes. Mbps, short for megabits per second, is a measure of data transfer speed (a megabit is equal to one million bits). The term Kbps means kilobits per second, or 1,000 bits per second. Dial-up modems, for example, are measured in Kbps. Of course these are theoretical maximums. Transfers are affected (slowed) by firewalls and encryption. Wireless router transfers are also affected by distance from the router and obstructions, e.g., walls and floors blocking a straight-line path from the transmitter to receiver.


Modem = 56 Kbps, “b” speed router = 11Mbps, “g” speed router = 54Mbps, “Super G” speed router = 108 Mbps, next up is the “n” speed router = specs not yet complete.

no, it will NOT speed up your connection to the internet any at all... the "108Mbps" is referring to the wireless transfer speed between your wireless device (i.e. a computer with a wireless card in it) and the wireless router.

from the router on out, the connection speed is currently limited by your service provider through either the cable or dsl modem.

Wow, two somewhat conflicting answers. The “true” answer lies as to your initial point of reference. I should have asked what type of connection you’re utilizing currently.

If you’re running a cable modem that is already hard-wired to your computer, a wireless router will definitely not be faster. If you’re currently using dial-up, switching to broadband with a wireless router should be much faster. If you’re currently running a “b” or “g” speed wireless router, the “super g” should be much faster in transferring data between the router and the PC (all other things being equal, e.g., distance, obstructions, etc.). As Nanotech9 said, it will NOT speed up your connection to the internet. But you will be able to download faster than dial-up, “n” or “g” speed because a “Super g” relieves some of the router-to-PC bottleneck.

The biggest advantage is, of course, to be able to operate multiple PCs/laptops on a single Internet connection without having to run a nest of wires. However, if your cable/DSL modem and router sit near a computer, you can run a wired connection from the router to the NIC port on that computer. Then use wireless feature for the rest of the computers on the network. That way you can have the best of both worlds.

Look at it this way:

Your internal network will ALWAYS be faster than your Internet connection.

A 100MB network card can move data around faster than your Internet connection can bring it in. A 54MB wireless connection can transfer data faster as well. Typical cable modems nowdays get 3-5MB.

So the only think you're enhancing is how fast you can copy files between LAN computers.

Got mine in and installed them. So far (after upgrading the firmware in the router), so good. Very fast and seems good. Haven't checked out the range yet, though. So I don't know how that particular aspect will compare with my old D-Link 802.11b stuff.

The 'G' version (54) router works pretty well. Easily configured before dropping it into my LAN, and it assigns 192.168.0.* to every laptop/card that comes into range. WPA-PSK is an option too.

Theoretically the G should be able to be flashed to the G+ (108). Just waiting to download new firmware...

So far, great 25$.... also picked up a belkin... we'll see how that runs.

my laptop has a built in wireless card already in it, and the max speed is 11mpbs. and i cannot tell the difference in speed when compared to my desktop which is directly connected to the router.

so my question is, whats the point of getting a 108mpbs router?

Well, you could always disable the built in wireless and purchase a 108Mbps wireless card to benifit from the increased speed.

just got it today, works perfectly. my laptop now runs at 54mbps and sometimes 24mbps.

it use to run at 11mbps.

the only thing i do not like is their admin page. when u log into it, there isnt a feature in the page that allows you to see who is connected or trying to connect to the router.

the belkin on the otherhand, did have this feature. and allows u to kick them out.

but, the good thing is, the at&t router allows u to protect it with a password, and no one with a laptop or wirless connection can connect to the router w/o the password.

i am still having trouble connecting my bothers desktop to the wireless router. he has xp and for some reason, it wont connect. when i set up the channels and ID to the specified id/#, the wireless connection disappears.

but, on my old win98 desktop, it connects without a problem.

Ok Guys...these new wireless standard such as b, g, g+ or pre-N are for data transfer and wider coverage. You have to know that there is no internet connection that can transfer 108mbps (well at least not for personal use) so you will not see your download faster than normal for example sbc yahoo dsl that you might have might have a max speed of 1.5 mbps download and that is the max.
So buy a higher standard if you want a wider coverage or a faster home network connection. Rememer bittorent on sbc yahoo has a max speed of 160 and so is your porn downloads ;)
