Hi everybody! I hope you all had a nice Xmas.

I am going to be relocating from OC to the Bay Area for a new job. I was wondering if anyone here could recomend a good moving company. I know there's a lot of dodgy one's out there and I'd feel better using one that others had good experiences with.

Thanks!

All I know is try to get someone from each company to come and give a quote for the whole move. Not hourly but a guaranteed price for the whole thing. Then it doesn't matter how long it takes cause you're paying a set price.

We've used Paul Arpin Van Lines (http://www.paularpin.com) in the past to relocate our office.
All of the actual workers look like ex-Cons (which i'm sure rings true for most moving companies), but they seemed like they did a nice job.

Be careful and be sure that you can check up on a place before you use them. I've read some real horror stories about people that hire a cut-rate moving company, and the company ends up holding all their possessions for "ransom" claiming that they owe double or triple of the expected moving costs.

my parents used Mayflower. No problems. A few minor things got broken as is expected in any move, but they replaced them without any hassle. Good experience overall.

If you're using a "name brand" mover (Bekin, Mayflower, North American Van Lines, etc.) you are pretty safe, but they are going to have the higher cost. Many of the horror stories I read about started when somebody did a web search for "discount movers" or such.

you get what you pay for in moving companies as in most things in life.

But in the case of a crooked moving company, they can get what you paid for.

We have moved I don't know how many times since we got married and have never used a moving company. How much stuff do you have? Rent a freakin truck, borrow a couple of friends with the promise of pizza & beer (or whatever) and have them help. :P Save a bunch of money that way and don't have to worry about hidden costs or surprises.

now that i have some nice furniture i want it moved professionally. not to mention that nice furniture is solid wood, large, and heavy as all get out. i've moved 4 times in the past few years and did it with the help of friends. never again for me.

not to mention, there are a lot of people who drive from LA to SF on the 5 that have rented their own trucks and can't drive worth a crap. they think they are driving a Honda Civic or something and bounce all over the road. I can't count the number of times I've had to take evasive action to avoid those nuts since I make that drive a lot. Not saying you do that Jenny, but if NullUnit2000 decides to go the DIY route, I hope he lets us know what day he's driving so I can stay the hell off of the road.

LOL well ok, true. If you have a lot of nice furniture and have the money, then it's worth it to use a moving company. And Scott always does the driving and it is always fine. hehe

i have this massive (read: insanely heavy and well built) blue couch that is a pull out bed. 2 of my friends have help me move the last few times i've moved. this last time when we put the couch in my living room they said, "if you ask us to help you move again, you'd better make sure this couch isn't here or we're not coming." the thing is a freaking beast and i will never move it again. the next home it has will be the trash or at someone else's house.
