Can PC2100 memory be used when a motherboard calls for faster memory?

Its for an Athlon 1800 XP.

Correct me if I'm wrong but an 1800+ only has a 266fsb which is what pc2100 is. So long as the socket is the same the motherboard can run the slower system even if its ideal for it to run 400mhz.

Great..I have a lot of PC2100 memory I bought several years ago which I will use. Thanks

It actually depends. Some systems have no problem running RAM slower than the CPU bus, but some will have problems. If you try it and it works, great, but if not, you might need to buy something faster. I had a P4 board that would not run my PC2100, so I thought about buying a gig of 3200, but was afraid it wouldn't work. I ended up with a gig of PC2700 that had no problems.

I think you're right - 266fsb so PC2100 is ideal to use.

johnnymk, are you sure that the mobo you're using supports all memory bandwidths inclusive of 400mhz? I'm sure it would be able to downsize just fine - most motherboards are backwards compatible as long as it's the same type of RAM.

I am not sure yet. I ordered that Biostar IDEQ Small Form Factor unit from newgg and haven't read the manual.

be careful you dont run fast memory with slow. all the memory will run at the frequency of the slowest stick in the motherboard
