View Full Version : End of year thread: Tally up the dead parts!
Please list the PC parts that have died on you or have been killed (accidentally of course http://sbp777.homestead.com/files/wink2.gif)
Your videocard gets partially fried cause the fan stopped working...you play a game and here comes the video corruption, the hard drive makes dying noises and needs to be stuck in the freezer to pull info off it and you wake up one memorable morn to find the mobo cold...and you weren't even overclocking!

Only thing is a classic Radeon AIW that I removed its noisy cooling fan, forgot it was gone, overclocked the card, and forgot about it. Oh well.

It was a pretty good year for us. All I can think of was the power supply on a Dell system that died after 16 months.

Lost one power supply, 2 motherboards, one celeron, one video card, 2 nic cards, one sound card... hmm oh two monitors... a mouse got drowned in coke and stopped working... everything else just got lit up by electiricty or stupidty.... Oh and my fat brother stepped on a dvd drive which then made a very disheartening click click thunk noise when i plugged it in. I decided it wasn't worth it to sacrifice a dvd to insure death. I simply assumed it died and sent it for a trip off a 5 story building... It may not have been dead, but it sure be dead now.

Lost one socket A motherboard.
I still have an Abit BP6 that is still operating with dual 500MHZ Celerons. I wish all my hardware was as sturdy as this board.

An old 17 inch CRT monitor from like 5 years ago. An optical mouse that I bought 5 years ago also from onsale.com....I think it was an intellimouse 1.1 which had the back button on one side and the forward button on the other. It was very left/right hand friendly. That thing has no screws so I can open it up and clean it out.

canon S330 digital camera. it was 2 years old. :(
My only dead part in 2004 was an old CD-ROM, but I got it used and it had issues from the beginning.
EDIT: I completely forgot about my 19" monitor. The green gun died about three weeks ago - I replaced it with a Dell 17" LCD. Love it!

1. HP PSC1200 Inkjet - didn't die but it sucked so bad that I had to replace it.
2. Western Digital 80GB HD - still sitting on the shelf, the freezer is too full of food and an exploded coke can to risk mucking up the drive any worse than it is???
3. GeForce4 MX420 - didn't break, but I found out that it is useless for anything productive, the plan is to replace it this month!
4. Canon G1 digital camera - The auto-focus engine has finally had enough. I can't complain, I have had it for 4+ years and taken between 12-15,000 pictures with it. I think it might be time for a digital rebel.
Knock on wood everything else seems to be in working order, if anyone wants a GeForce4 MX420 let me know.

I'm gonna add to the list another laptop screen for the aforementioned Inspiron 8200. It just died today and I think it's the backlight that went out.
Oh well, at least I have that 3-year warranty (with about 200 days remaining).. Aren't I glad I shelled out extra to pick that one up.. I've been certainly using it lately!

LiteOn 52x CD-Writer (just started writing coasters one day and wouldn't stop)
Intel Pentium-M 1.4GHz CPU (died at a LAN party where the A/C didn't work)
Creative Labs 8x CD-RW (refuses to read anything)
I think that's all.

The only thing that died was a crappy EPO 16x DVD-ROM in my kids’ computer. It was only used intermittently and sure did not get many DVD’s played on it. I believe it only had a 90-day warranty. Not much of a loss since it was only about $20 AR from CompUSA. But I’ll never buy another EPO product again.
