Anyone do it yet? I just got the camera and am very tempted to hack it to get the extra features. i am very hesitant though. Are there items made available that work? It appears the only downside is the langauage cannot be changed without a lockup.

Have you seen any hacks for the canon S500? I want one that allows video recording until the card is full rather than 2min or 30sec (depending on resolution).

Hacks for a camera? DUDE... this is the first I have heard of that. I, too, would be hesitant to hack an expensive camera like the Digital Rebel.

I've heard it works just fine, but I haven't been able to test it out.

It's not a software limitation. Video recordings are restricted from being of longer length because of the size of the camera's image buffer. :)

I have a friend who flashed the firmware and have been using it fine since. I believe it is reversible (as in if something goes wrong you can turn it back over to the DRebel firmware) but I don't think in his case it was necessary.

I got Linux to boot up on my Canon SD200 because I am teh l33t!

Actually I didn't think of hacking camera's firmware before. What are some of the other features you can get out of it?

Actually, firmware hacks aren't really a universal concept. This works for D-Rebel because the EOS-10D and the EOS-300D (the D-Rebel) share essentially the same hardware components (CCD, mirror, chips, etc). It appears as if Canon stripped down the 10D to market it as a sub-$1000 DSLR. By flashing the firmware on the 300D, it can be converted into a 95% 10D which is more expensive.

Seeing as it's extremely rare for two different camera models to share such a large list of components together, I think the firmware hack is almost exclusive to the Digital Rebel. At least I haven't heard of any other firmware hacks/upgrades that'll boost performance.
