Use this to extend the range of your wireless Internet signal for both 802.11b and 802.11g. This is a good product if you experience dead spots in your house or need to extend your wireless signal. Works with most common detachable wireless antenna (SMA and TNC connectors included).

Up to $18.13 AR, but still a great price - normally $50. Non-DOTD linky: http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10348661&loc=101&sp=1

Just make sure your WAP has a detatchable antenna before you pick up one of these. Also, since this is omnidirectional, the best place for this is right in the middle of your house, hanging from the ceiling if possible (or at least sitting on something tall).

How far should something like this extend your range if you are trying to use your wireless outside the house?

If it's inside the house & you want to surf outside? Guess it would depend on how many walls between you & the WAP, and whether there's any other interference (like a 2.4GHz phone, microwave oven, etc). However, I'd guess it should pretty easily allow you to surf outside your house - maybe even into the neighbor's house.

It should work with any WAP as long as it has a removable antenna with an SMA or TNC connection:

You only need one. It does not matter which one you put it on. The linksys models will pick the antenna with the strongest signal.

If you really want to save some money you can make your own directional antenna pretty easily. Check it out here:

linky (http://www.freeantennas.com/products.htm)

According to the website you can get a 12dB gain by doing this.

Also, if you follow the buy links from Hawking Tech to NewEgg it shows the standard price of the antenna as $29 ($19 AR), not $50. The buy.com price is still better, but not by much. Never believe the MFRP because they are almost always inflated to make the percentage saving seem better.
