I'm psyched! TiVO is starting a new feature which will allow you to transfer files to PC's, and new Sonic software will allow for files to be burned to DVD. I can download stuff from my fiancee's TiVO and take it with me. Also, no more need to upgrade TiVO's since you can just plop a bigger hard drive in your PC & keep the shows there. This is probably the best feature they've added since we got her a recorder.

They initially wanted to limit how many hours of programming could be transfered and what programs could be transfered (non-copyrighted). Has this changed?

replaytv allows you to transfer file to your computer using DVArchive. Its been this way for some time, and there isnt any restrictions

Except this involves hacking or installing a program on your replaytv that's not condoned by replaytv.

Tivo to go is legal.

Now if only they would send me the new software so I can use tivo to go! Come on mr. tivo! Version 7!

You know what would be awesome? If TIVO allowed you to send files to other TIVO's. That would be dope. When they can do that, I will buy one.

dvarchive goes on your computer, not on your replaytv. In no way does in void a warranty or anything of that nature.

You can, as long as they're on your home network. You can't share with anybody else, but you can share between your own TiVO's, and soon your own PC's.

I have been using DVArchive to offload my ReplayTV for over 2 years now. I then converted the shows to MPEG1 format and burned them to DVD. In short, it rocks. The fact that Tivo is just now coming out with this makes me glad that I purchased my ReplayTV 5080 unit over 2 years ago. Not to mention we have Commercial Advance too. :D

What I was thinking is if let's say my sis in LA likes a program that plays only in Diego, that I could record it for her and send it to her TIVO. That would be awesome.

What are you using to convert the shows?

I use G-Spot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) (Please enter any gratuitous sexual comments here) to identify different video files to make sure I can convert the codecs info MPEG1 format (for DVD playback). Then I use VideoReDo (http://www.drdsystems.com/VideoReDo/download.htm) to edit the MPEG2 stream and cut out all the commercials. I then convert it to MPEG1 using NeroVisionExpress where I make my DVD menus and burn my compilations to DVD.

Fopr more information on ReplayTV apps and such, try AVS Forums (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?forumid=27) .

Check out the 5000 series ReplayTV's. They have this capability. The 5500 series has had this removed though due to resulting legal issues.

I use MPEG2 Works on my mac for MPEG conversion. I paid like 10 bucks for teh shareware over a year ago, and I am still getting free updates. The guy that wrote it does a great job in keeping it updated. Its very easy to do.

ON the topic of transfering video to your computer from replay, it involves no hacking or installing any program on your replay. Just had to clarify that

The program is called DVArchive for those that are interested

Yep! Been doing that for a couple of years now. I love it. I have the 40GB, and I have also had a 160GB harddrive that I have been wanting to add to it to make it 200GB for awhile now. It's sitting in my external USB case. I will get to that at some point.

So you mean I should look on eBay or something since the new models don't have this feature? That would be cool!

replaytv.com sometimes has them. i bought mine from their ebay seller. I have since hacked it with a 200GB HD. (thanks to the $22 dell deal a while back)
