i got rejected from a job today, which i was actually happy about....one of those things where everything worked out ok in the end.

i interviewed with a crapload of law firms at the end of the summer and got a few offers for work next summer. however, i'm not too excited about the whole law thing so i've also been looking at management consulting.

my friend's wife works at a major consultancy, so she passed on my resume to their HR people with a nice recommendation, saying that i would be a great hire.

the problem was that their interview process wasn't starting until january, and i needed to tell the law firm for which i will be working wether or not i'd be joining their summer class by Jan. 1. i didn't want to string the firm out, because the whole consulting thing was something of a longshot and i wanted to go into the firm on the best footing possible (not looking like i had one foot out the door already). so i just decided to accept the firm offer.

that of course left me with the problem of needing to withdraw my application from the consulting firm while still reiterating my interest in future employment.

so when i got an email from them today with the typical "you are the most wonderful candidate EVER, but we just can't interview you right now. please come back next fall when we're interviewing for full-time hires," it was actually a huge relief.

so i'm set for next summer, got out of the consulting thing without hurting any connections, and can finally relax about this whole damn job thing for a few months.

all things happen for a reason. sometimes it just takes awhile to figure that reason out.
