Back to listening for codes...after a very, very close call.

At 3:30 am Monday morning we got a reverse 911 message over the phone to get ready to evacuate.

At 4:30 am we received a mandatory evacuation order. We grabbed a few things andtook off.

As we were leaving the house the fire was at the top of the hill behind our house.

We went to our daughter's house 5 miles away to the west. However, at 6:30 am they got an emergency evacuation order...so we all went to a local church.

At 11 a.m. the church got their evac order. So, all 4 of us took off in my car looking for a place to watch TV and have internet access.

By the time we realized we should be looking for hotel to stay for the evening it was too late....all the hotels in the county were gone. We did finally find a place where we stayed 2 nights.

On Wednesday we were allowed to go back to our house.

Click to see some pictures taken on my street.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/42554969@N00/

I have uploaded a bunch of pictures that show:

My house with a very large fallen tree blocking my driveway. The fire department came over and used their chain saws to cut part of it away so I could get into my house.

The house right next door to the west was destroyed. Some of the trees between our two house were also burned. A few of the trees on my property got partially burned...but the house was not touched by fire.

On the other side of my house, two houses up to the east was destroyed.

Another dozen houses on my street were also destroyed.

We have no power and they think it might be another 2-3 days, but could actually be 2 weeks before we get power restored.

We have been staying in my house each night doing some clean-up....using flashlights to read and do some mail-in sweeps entries.

Right now I am at my daughter's to use her internet connection.

My daughter lives in a condo in 4S Ranch 5 miles to the west. One picture shows that the fire came halfway down the hill to her building...the top half of the hill is blackened.

We were doubly blessed....too many of our neighbors have total losses.

Glad to hear you are ok.
Not your case, but, Ive seen on tv, some houses got saved, but the ones on both the sides got affected totally. I was wondering what they mightve done to avoid this (Maybe sprinkler on the roof, no trees or bushes sort of things ?) Any idea.

The answer to your question is a bit complicated:

1. Many of the homes lost were not due to the fire sweeping in from some place...they caught fire from a burning ember that can fly as much as a mile from a fire...and land on a house and get it on fire. It is often the "luck" of the draw where the embers will fly to and land.

2. If the fire dept is nearby when the house initially gets on fire they have to make a quick decision on which house to try and save....they can't save them all. If the fire has gotten into the eaves the firemen say there is no point in trying to save it...it can't be stopped...so the firemen concentrate on the houses nearby...trying to keep them from catching fire and being lost. That's what happened with my house...the one next door got on fire from an ember...the firemen decided they couldn't save it, but they concentrated on flooding my house area with water to keep it from catching fire.

3. The firemen also make a quick determination based on the yard status....my house had the whole back area cleared of brush and trees so they determined it had less of a chance of being on fire...while others had brush around and a greater chance of igniting....they worked hard on my house because they determined I had worked hard to keep it from being a target.

4. Some of the homes lost were not even near a canyon...they were in the middle of a development....they were just unlucky to get hit by a flying burning ember...a mile and half from the main fire.

YOU SHOULD GO AND BUY SOME LOTTO TIX....YOU ARE VERY LUCKY !!!!!!!

A PAIR OF TICKETS TO SEE THE RAT PACK - LIVE AT THE SANDS ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 19TH

THE RAT PACK – Live at the Sands is the hottest and coolest party in town. After four unprecedented years on London's West End, this acclaimed production vividly recreates a legendary evening at the Sands Hotel with the most famous performers of our time: Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Dean Martin. Relive the excitement of those nights in a Broadway/San Diego ~ A Nederlander Presentation at SAN DIEGO CIVIC THEATRE, NOVEMBER 19 -25. THE RAT PACK – Live at the Sands transports the audience to the early 1960’s, when Frank and his pals were filming the original Ocean’s Eleven in Las Vegas. The Rat Pack legend was born when Frank and Dean, to the surprise and delight of the audience, spontaneously joined Sammy in his act. Subsequent nights saw the hi-jinks and horseplay of all three onstage together. They crooned, they quipped and they rolled out the gags right along with their on-stage liquor cart.

Audiences will swing and swoon to the Rat Pack’s signature songs: ‘My Kinda Town’; ‘Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime’; Fly Me to the Moon’; ‘Me and My Shadow’; ‘What Kind of Fool am I’; ‘Mack the Knife’; ‘The Lady is a Tramp’; ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’; ‘That Old Black Magic’; ‘That’s Life’; ‘Mr. Bojangles’; ‘That’s Amore’; ‘Sway’; ‘Volare’; ‘My Way’; ‘New York, New York’; ‘One For My Baby’...
