View Full Version : What are some good AWD cars?
I'm thinking about getting a beater car that'd be good for driving A LOT during the week and that'd be good in snow (even though MD is really unpredictable sometimes).
My budget would be about $6K max and want something that gets at least 19+ MPG. I'd like it to be 96 or more recent.
I'm looking around at some Volvos, but since I'm not familiar with them, I don't know which models are AWD.

I think any ol' subby would fit that bill.
I'm reading "Subby" as SUB-ee.
Do you mean Soob-ee as is Subaru?

I believe your best bet is probably the S70 AWD if you're in the Volvo department. I don't know what they might be going in the market but I believe the 99+ models have that option. I don't think the 850, the S70's predecessor, had the AWD option so at your price range Volvos might be completely out, although I'm not too sure about that.
Subarus are AWD throughout the model line and might be a good choice, although I'm very partial to Volvos.

yes, subby = subaru
for 6k sedan, that probably is your best price. not too many cheaper cars will have awd as an option - subaru being the exception.
another idea is if you are willing to go sports cars, there are some mid-late 90's awd mitsubishi eclipse/eagle talons that might be avail. These did have an AWD as an option.

I also suggest looking at used subarus.

I see lots of Suburu AWD cars when I'm in the Sierras for ski trips. I have driven my cousins' Subaru and it handled well in the snowy conditions we were in.

my cousin just bought a used 98 or 99 Subaru Outback and it is a great car. she paid aroun $7K buying it from a private seller. sounds like Subaru would indeed be the best choice for you Kevs.

just to throw this in... Car and Driver did a test back in the late 80's / early 90's that placed the BMW e30 AWD leaps and bounds above any other at the TIME. (who knows now).
Had reports of guys on the bimmer forums creaping up icy hills in the AWD bimmers passing AWD volvos or subie's or jeeps etc...
the great news is a '90 or '91 e30 325iX is only about $5k... you just gotta be carefull to get one that isnt worn out. The engines run forever but the AWD components get worn after a while and are priecy to replace.

e30 325iX's aren't that easy to find, let alone hunt for replacement parts. i say go subaru =)

ive been in an AWD S70, its a nice ride... I think a Subaru is more in your budget however because if the S70 breaks you are looking at mad $$ in repairs
