For some reason, I really love doing my taxes. I always have. I got them done Saturday and electronically filed them. My refund should be in my checking account within 10 days.
I'm still waiting for a few of my tax statements. Otherwise, I should have it all done by the end of February!

what??? I haven't even gotten any of my W2s! The only form I got so far is a education loan interest form...
I have to apply for financial aid for school and it looks like I need my taxes done before I can do that :(
oh gosh, I don't even know how to start on my taxes. What do you do if you are married but separated, the divorce hasn't even been started, and you only worked for 5 months of the year???? He's going to get all the money, isn't he.

Being around "high powered radio equipment" probably has warped your mind.... :hmm:

You can choose to file either "married filing jointly" or "married filing separately".
You will pay more taxes if you choose "married filing separately".

you need an accountant, even though it will cost you, it will save you money in the long run i'll bet.
have you chosen a lawyer to handle your divorce yet? maybe he/she can advise you.
there is NO WAY he is gonna get all the money Kim.
I have to wait until the end of the month to see if I get anything for being on Disability. If I didn't have to wait, they would be done.

Congrats. I love filing taxes. It's puts a nice number on the amount of work I've done in the past year. On the other hand, this year... But that's not what we're discussing.

Not to burst your bubble Kim, but he may indeed get whatever is coming back to you both..he was the major source of income. Now NYS law says everything is a 50/50 split..including any kind of tax refunds for the year prior to the split..Check the law in your state. Definately get a lawyer, and not that it's any of my business, but I certainly hope he pays you a decent amount of child support and preferably through a court ordered payment program (child support collection unit). If not, I'd cut him off at the knees.

I love filing taxes too. I think it's fun. I know I'm psycho, but I really think it's fun. I don't work, so I don't have any taxes of my own to file. But I file my husband's. He doesn't even have his W2 yet. I think he usually gets them on the very last day.

My taxes are going to be done on Lincoln's Birthday. I have a few twists that require the services of my tax guy. This should be another good year for me, too.
Kim, if you can stand one more piece of advice, get a lawyer right now if you haven't already done so. It doesn't matter how nice your STBX is being-- you really need to legally protect yourself, your kids, and your interests.
My divorce took over 2 years to finalize, and one smart thing my ex did was to hire a lawyer and get an court order placed which stated what support I was to pay her (not through the Child Support Collection Unit-- more on that later). This protected her so she knew what she was getting financially, and it protected me from any legal action, plus it was easy to identify these funds when I did my taxes. It was also discussed between our lawyers who was to get whatever tax refunds came back (the first year, we had to pay so that was moot).
We lined a couple of lawyers' pockets with this, but I know it would have been a mell of a hess if we hadn't.
Side note: I don't know what it's like in your state, but in Illinois the Child Support unit is a complete disaster. A friend of mine was getting Child Support checks from her ex through the state's system, and she would get nothing for a month and then four checks at once. Then she'd get another check a week later, then nothing for three weeks, then three checks. And all this time her ex had the money taken out of his paycheck weekly, so it wasn't his fault. In my divorce, I told both lawyers that I would pay my ex directly (through automatic bank transfers) to avoid the state-- they both agreed that was a better idea.
I've been told more than once that I am a great person to have as an ex. :) (And if all goes as planned, there won't be another ex.)

I'm still waiting for a few documents myself. My taxes have always been a paper work mess.

W2s sent to you must be postmarked by Jan 31st. Make sure they have the right home address on file. Also you can file a estimated FAFSA before you do your taxes.
BTW I submitted mine last night. I was hoping for more back. I wish the took the money where I couldn't notice because I hate seeing howmuch I pay the gov (not that it's huge or anything, just kinda sucks seeing it. Along the same lines I don't like looking at the needle when I donate blood)

Change the subject to "SS: taxes done" :(
I just finished my Minnesota state taxes and found that this year I get hit by the state Alternative Minimum Tax, so I have to pay $500 more than I expected. That sucks.
Well, at least my federal refund will more than cover the amount I have to pay for state.
