Struyk blames a set of spinners for a near-accident he had before Christmas. He said he was driving along a rural road when he saw another car stopped at a four-way-stop with spinners.

"I couldn't tell if the car was going to stop or not because he had spinning hubcaps," Struyk said. "So I jammed on the brakes and had my trailer (nearly) jackknife on me."

Tire enthusiasts, however, are not convinced their wheels are dangerous.

"That's crazy. If somebody can look at wheels spinning and . . . can't tell if the car is moving or not, maybe they shouldn't be on the road,' said Chad Saxton, a salesman at Total Truck in Des Moines.

You should be looking at the brake lights not the wheels when cars in front stop.

I believe the guy was at a 4 way stop looking at somone perpendicular to him and thus he could only see the side of the car.

That guy must be a really crappy driver. Blaming the other car for his trouble with the trailer is just plain bad form. :disa:

And yes, I too think they are ass ugly.

OK ok, if its at night, its a dark road, and youve had a long day...MAybe u could honestly think that someone might still be moving forward. Especially if your not familiar with the fad. Cmon give styurk a brake, he almost jackknifed his trailer!!!

I dont think it was the hubcap ones, the real ones (that cost $2000+) that would really throw someone off.

Spinners are probably one of the less individual things you could do to your car. I see them everwhere. I don't care how much they cost they are still tacky as hell. I throw them in the same circle as people who have huge spoilers on their car or who get rid of all the yellow lights up front... bad tint jobs, etc. IMHO they just aren't that attractive. Like the guy who shows up to prom in an olive tux: Just inept.

It's more of a societal thing. It's not really a call any one person makes but some times things just don't look right.:2far:

I say.. "it depends on the application".

There are some that look really good (but honestly... those are the ones that are HYPER expensive). Most of the ones you've probably seen are the cheaper (but yet still too expensive) knockoff versions. :D

So he gets pissed off, because he looks like a fool, so he makes a big stink. It's just like the average Joe, who rear ends someone and wants the cop to make sure the cars brakes lights in front of him weren't faulty. If the damn things were flying off while the vehicle was in motion then I could see why they could be a hazard.

What’s next if they ban these, off highway lights, tire-flies (oh my god, I thought the flashing light was an accident cone on the car next to me?). Give me a break, people need to use some common sense and let people modify their vehicle the way they want (within reason).

Are these spinners unsafe? Not unless you try to stick your hand into them after someone came to a screeching halt from 80 mph. This guy nearly jack knifed his trailer because of spinners; well obviously he wasn’t paying attention to the road until the vehicle startled him. I am sure people can relate to this, your driving along and for some reason your mind starts to wander and your driving down the road, you approach a traffic light that was blinking yellow, (for example a fire house). You quickly grab for the brakes and nosedive the car a bit then your brain tells you its ok to go through because it’s just a caution light. I have seen numerous people do this.

At night, with your headlights approaching a vehicle at an intersection (90 degree angle), your headlights hitting the spinners would start to reflect light in different directions, which normally would catch the attention of the person driving the vehicle (it does for my eyes). At that point your brain would do the reflexes for you do I stop, what is that, why is it there, why is it spinning? Not a last second within 20 feet of the car and jam on the brakes because you’re not paying attention. I understand there are circumstances where maybe you can’t see around a corner to an intersection, there is a tree in the way, etc. At those intersections the normal suggested travel speed would obviously be lower because of the conditions.

So ban spinners because people can’t process the facts in-front of them quickly? I think those type of people need to be re-evaluated for driving. If a large immobile object has a spinning object on it and you can’t determine what to do, you frankly don’t need to be putting my life in danger, thanks.

What next, cop vehicles with their strobe lights causing seizures, well time to ban that! Perhaps, the bright light when you get pulled over by the cops shining in your window causes retinal damage, or blindness, time to ban that! Maybe the concrete truck that has a spinning hopper should not be allowed to spin while it travels down the road. Use the brain that god gave you, if it’s not up to par, train it. :spock:

Edit: Broke up a little, easier?

I had no real opinion about the law. I was joking when I said ban them for tackyness. Personaly, I'm more than willing to trade my right to spinners for a modicum of improved safety. But then again, I don't really plan on owning any.

House File 108 would make it a simple misdemeanor, punishable with a $10 fine, if a driver is caught with so-called "spinners" on a state highway.

I'm sure people with spinners are going to be really worried about a $10 fine.

I just thought of something, imagine some cop giving you a ticket because he thought you didnt come to a complete stop at a stop sign. Good reason for everyone to get them, you can beat the damn ticket.
