from the main page...

be aware, they charge per month for HDTV and DVR, even though their website claims the monthly fees will be waived.

I've spoken with customer support over the phone and they deny any false advertising, although as far as I can read it does say "up to 4 TV's free hdtv, free dvr, no equipment to buy" and if they're charging more money for you to have an HDTV or DVR receiver per month, then it's not free. I'm either buying the equipment or paying for the service...but either way, it's not free.

I've sent in a letter to customer service and am awaiting a response now.

Hope I'm not overstepping my boundries here, but it really does seem wrong to me

Whenever there is a discrepency i always ask for a manager. They usually are more knowledgeable or can do something for you.

I encountered the same issue.

From my perspective, there is no way to get out of the $5 monthly fee for the DVR b/c it comes from DISH, not one of these shady authorized re-sellers/installers. I just decided to pay it.

After considerable research, I decided against purchasing the service thru one of these out-of area retailers because I knew that if there was a problem, getting it resolved would be a pain.

Rather, I went with SBC (same as my phone/DSL service). Instead of free install, there was a $9 charge.

In exchange, there is no 1 year commitment. Rather, I can cancel at any time.

To me, this feature was easily worth the $9. Furthermore, if there is a problem with something, getting ahold of SBC (local) is preferable to calling some podunct company in who knows where.....

(I also got a $50 visa card for signing up - promotion)
