'Lucky' licence plate goes for $910,000

A Hong Kong man wins the bidding for a license plate with the number 12.

HONG KONG, Feb 21 (Reuters) - A mysterious man in a mask drove off with the most expensive vehicle licence plate sold in Hong Kong since 1997, shelling out HK$7.1 million (US$910,000) at a weekend auction, a Hong Kong newspaper reported on Monday.

The man, who wore a surgical mask and would not identify himself, left the auction immediately after winning the bid for licence plate number 12, which sounds like "certainly easy" in Cantonese, the South China Morning Post said.

The price was the highest for a licence plate in Hong Kong since the British colony was returned to China in 1997 and the third highest on record, the paper said.

The most expensive licence plate, number 9, was sold to tycoon Albert Yeung for HK$13 million (US$4 million) in 1994. That number nine sounds like "ever lasting" in Cantonese.

Asians especially Chineses are very superstitious and they believe that this would bring luck. :shrug:

888 is also a hard number to get.

Wow, sorry but that's insane. I guess if you're THAT superstitous and have that much money to just blow, then more power to ya. But I still can't see spending that much money on a license plate.

this is hong kong you're talking about. There are a LOT of rich people there and chinese people are generally superstitious. We like good karma :)

But yeah, that's stupid.

I would think the liscence plate with just 8 would auction for more than 9. There obsessed with that #. I work at a bank, if i give an asian person an account # that ends in 4 they get all squirmey and make me change it.
