British plot hacked down Down Under

AN EAGLE-eyed Aussie watching on webcam tipped off police about two men acting suspiciously 17,000km away.

Andrew Pritchard was logged on to a site relaying live images from the English town of Exmouth when something caught his eye.

As he watched the computer screen at his home in the remote NSW town of Boorowa, he saw a car pull up in a dark deserted street and two men spill out before heading toward a closed beachfront kiosk.

Using his mouse to swivel the camera around, the 62-year-old audio-visual professional was able to follow the unfolding action.

"They were walking around as if casing it out and I got all excited," he said.

Certain he was witnessing a burglary on the other side of the world, Mr Pritchard rang the Devon police.

"I'm calling from Australia," Mr Pritchard told the policeman on the other end of the line. "I'm watching a live webcam of Exmouth esplanade. I believe I'm witnessing a burglary of the kiosk."

Within minutes, while still on the phone to a British police officer, he saw a police car arrive on his computer screen and mount the footpath. Two police cars approached the kiosk from different sides.

In Bellwood, Illinois (a suburb near me) they've installed quite a few cameras for police monitoring. Their plan, according to this story (http://cbs2chicago.com/topstories/local_story_082164448.html): "Twenty-one cameras are expected to be up by May and 65 by the fall. One village official said every square inch of public space in Bellwood will eventually be under surveillance."

So if you ever visit Bellwood, SMILE! :)

i think this kind of survailence is good and bad. good that it will keep the streets safer and bad cuase somthing may not may look different than it is. i guess it wont be long before these will be installed in front of everyones house.

Cams are beginning to be the norm now. We have 2 x 16 camera systems at work for a total of 32 cameras. They hate it when I log in late at night to check on them. Did you all ever check out my link to the OB cam? www.oceanbeachsandiego.com (http://www.oceanbeachsandiego.com) then click on OB CAM. Try it while it's light out!

cool cam thanxLol...that's what I think when I watch here from home. So I made myself go out for a walk and watch the sunset. Some web cams are great though. This one is #1 on my list.

Can we rotate it 180 to see if you snore at night?
Anyway, it's cool that you're that close to the beach. The best I get is a nice view of the Seaworld fireworks from my balcony. ('course they're cool too, and on July 4th I can see about 10 different firework shows.)

Anyway, welcome back white goddess.
