My coworker's car died 6 months ago, and i subsequently helped her select a car to purchase. Throughout the time, I was pretty adamant about her buying a car with side airbags.
She listened, and bought with side airbags as the only major criteria. Before that, she didn't even consider it.
Just last friday, a coworker from an east coast office was visitng. My coworker and the visitor were driving back from lunch when her car was t-boned at full speed by a red light runner on the passenger side.
The passenger had to be cut out with the jaws of life; and had to undergo emergency surgery. It was noted by doctors and paramedics that the side airbags in her car saved her, since the other vehicle was a large van/suv/pickup.
My coworker; though shaken up and still in a bit of shock; thanked me today for convincing her to get a car with side airbags. I just never thought she'd actually use them.
