I know this gentleman personally, and recommend him highly - hopefully Escondido is close enough:

Mike, what's the best way to start a relationship with a mechanic? Send him chocolate around Cristmas time? Have him do the wheel alignment on your tires? Go out to a bar and buy him a beer?

All of the above... Just as you would in dealing with any other type of small service-based business.
Seriously, treat him/her like you'd like to be treated, tell him/her if you are happy with his service (or if you aren't happy, and why - just don't get an attitude...), listen to his/her recommendations, and refer your friends/relations/neighbors/co-workers to him/her.
I'm gonna get roasted for this, but I am of the opinion that there aren't any more "dishonest mechanics" out there than there are "dishonest carpenters", "dishonest doctors", etc. There are certainly some incompetent ones, but I have found that most mechanic/customer "issues" center around miscommunication or lack of communication.

Wouldn't have worked for me personally. OTOH, if you were female, cute, and had a bottle of JD instead of a six-pack of beer we could discuss/explore it...
DISCLAIMER: I have been involved with the automotive service business professionally for almost 22 years, and not once have I ever repaired an automobile in return for sexual favors.
There's always a first time for everything, though, as per my comments above. :)

This guy has been pretty good to me...did my timing belt and water pump after I decided not to do it myself (i think it was 190 for labor + PS and AC belts... I already had the timing belt and water pump).
Le's (pronounced Lee) Auto Service - 760.747.7546
