Thanks to how much my old HP Laserjet 1200 cost me at Costco, I was able to return it and get a new HP color laserjet 2550L for all of $20! I have had this new monstrosity for about 5 hours now and printed 2 things other than the lovely test pages. Thus far I am pretty happy with it but only time will tell.

I have three things that I dont like thus far:
1) There is no paper bin!! It has a fold down loader with optional paper bins for sale seperately. Every other damn laserjet I have bought had paper bins. Hell, the 1200 I turned in had a paper bin...why doesnt this thing have one!

2) It seems slower and noiser than my older laserjet. No, I am not comparing color to black/white/grayscale here. There were a ton of steps in the set-up and it doesnt seem to have the instant reaction time of the plain lasers. I guess thats what you get for adding color to the equation. Also as a result of the mechanism (carousel device for the different colors) it makes a racket. Hopefully that wont be as noticeable in a day or two while I am doing mostly b/w printing.

3) Its a monstrosity! Seriously the footprint of this thing takes up a quarter of a large desk. Add onto this the fact that I have the fold down paper input I would have to say its 3 feet in depth! This will not do....definitely going to have to track down the paper bins and hope I can get a deal. (Anyone know of a good cheap place to get them?)

Finally, on a more humorous note or two:
a) The box clearly states that this has 64mb of ram as is....the literature that came with it says 32. When I have a moment I will find out the truth there. -- edit-- I checked the system specs, sure enough its 64!

b) The box says no cables included....then what the hell is this USB cable that was in the box?

c) My wife grabbed a piece of high gloss photo paper to test out how pictures come out. I ask her if its rated for the laser. She tells me that she doesnt know, it only says inkjet on it but she will find out what happens either way. Sure enough, with that comment she hits print. Let me tell you, DO NOT use inkjet high gloss paper in a color laserjet. I dont know what the heat of the laser did to the paper, but its suddenly rough and the colors are WAY OFF. The paper actually gives me goosebumps when I touch it now due to the new texture. (After that I showed her that I happened to have high gloss laser paper in the drawer over here that I was saving until we bought a color laser. Unfortunately, we have four or five things of inkjet glossy paper without a working inkjet printer (or at least without one that we currently have the ink for)

So...thats the info as of now...carry on.
