interesting article. i think it's great that the dodgers are doing something to honor his memory.

i was curious about the implication that the falling percentage of baseball rosters filled by african americans is an indication that the league is regressing on race issues. it really seems to me that in all the major sports (i don't know about golf or tennis, although those are hardly major sports), the color barriers as far as players are basically non-existant.

(obviously, in the coaching/management areas, there are arguably many barriers that exist. but i'm talking solely about players).

basically, professional teams want to get the players who are going to be the best. increasingly, that means scouting and drafting from all over the world. in the case of baseball, that means that the EXTREMELY fertile talent pools in puerto ricoh, the dominican republic, mexico, and other latin countries are being scouted and drafted heavily. i mean, i see the declining number of african americans in MLB as no more important (and no more related to race) than the declining number of white americans in the NBA.
