On a humerous note, from SI.com's daily 10-spot...

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/writers/pete_mcentegart/04/19/ten.spot/index.html

8. A day after owner George Steinbrenner's outburst, the Yanks exploded for a 13-run second inning in Monday's 19-8 laugher over the Devil Rays. With the Yankees back in line, a feeling-his-oats Steinbrenner issued a new press release directed at the Cardinals: "Enough is enough. Let's pick that new pope now!"

Also, here's a little bit of trivia. Did you know that Vatican City is the smallest country in the world?

Germany's Ratzinger is new pope
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany was elected the 265th pontiff today by the College of Cardinals. He was announced as tens of thousands of people cheered in St. Peter's Square. Ratzinger has chosen the name Benedict XVI, the Vatican announced. The announcement came shortly after white smoke rose from the Vatican chimney and bells rang to announce that a new pope had been selected

Why do they change their names?

Its traditional to take the name of a saint, apostle or early church father or a homage to a famous pope.

Because there are more Italian cardinals. They represent the largest voting bloc.

Why do they change their names?

After some serious searching, I found this:

When a man is elected pope, the cardinal dean asks him two questions. First, the candidate is asked if he accepts the office. If that's a "yes," he's then asked what name he wants to be known by as pope. Presumably, he's thought about this beforehand, because immediately, the two masters of ceremonies draw up documents to announce the new pope and his name.

Choosing a papal name isn't required by Catholic ritual, but it's been tradition since the year 1009. The first pope to change his name was John II in 533. His birth name was Mercurius or Mercury -- which was also the name of a pagan god and not so good for the head of the Christian church. New papal names started to become popular, but they weren't absolute. The last pope to keep his given name as pope was Marcellus II in 1555.

These days, a new pope often picks the name of his favorite saint or pope to be his papal name.

Not a shock. JP2 was an arch-conservative and every bishop and cardinal he appointed for the past 25 years is an arch-conservative. He did a good job of ensuring the church will be just as conservative as he was for a good long time.

What are the chances in this country the Christian Coalition would endorse a liberal? ;)

i think the article i read (natl geog special edition of some sort, published for putting in the pouch on the back of airplane seats...) must have had different standards for what constitutes a "country." they were talking about one country that was a single building, with about 6 citizens, and other stuff... i guess they were including independently governed areas that don't quite have the true status of "country."

I was going to post something similar. When I stayed over in Germany the grandfather was a double amputee from the war. His father owned a shoe shop and was forced to be a "good" member of the party. They almost shut down the store when the son (grandfather) wouldn't fight. He did and paid for it with half a leg and half an arm.

The grandfather is still living. He went to Sri Lanka to do his accupuncture thing after the tsunami, he's awesome.

I'd be careful with branding people Nazi's or inferring anything from "nazi ties".

And I really don't think the guy is a Nazi. He was drafted into the Hitler Youth (compulsory), but he was released after a while when he decided to get on track for the priesthood. When he was older, he was drafted as a "helper" in a Nazi anti-aircraft unit, as he wasn't old enough to be drafted into the army. When he was old enough, he was drafted and sent to basic training. He finished training when the war ended. From reading several news sources, I get the impression that he really didn't have a choice in his military training. I don't think that counts as "Nazi ties."

So if anyone was wondering:

Proclaiming himself Pope Benedict XVI, Joseph Ratzinger, the German known for relentlessly guarding the church against all doctrinal deviation, yesterday gave his first papal blessing to cheering throngs that had filled St. Peter's Square as white smoke and bells announced his election as the new pope.
What's in a name?

And in Germany, Ratzinger's decision to choose the papal name Benedict XVI is being hailed as conciliatory move. Their hope is that he will follow in the footsteps of Benedict XV, who became Pope in 1914 and worked to build bridges in a bitterly divided church.
Another aspect of the name may have appealed to the new pope. He is known as a scholar, just like Pope Benedict XIV and Pope Bendict XI before him.
