I don't think the little speaker in my phone has enough juice to actually hurt my ears/hearing.

given that the person on the other end would likely move the receiver away from his/her ear within a second, the chances of permanent damage are close to zero.
160 db does instant damage
130 db is the pain threshhold, and is about equivalent to standing on a runway as a jet is taking off
120 db needs to be sustained for 1 min before damage occurs (120 is like standing right under a big thunderclap)
85 db is the minimum needed to do damage, and must be sustained for 8 hours for damage to occur.

I'm glad you posted that list, wl. I did some checking, and a standard telephone will only output 85 db. Anything above that is simply clipped. Even an amplified receiver for the hard-of-hearing will only do about 105 db.
This subject came up because a radio host suggested doing that to debt collectors that get rude. A bunch of people admonished him because he was advocating what some suggested was assault. My first thought was like Merlin's; the tiny little speaker could not reproduce the same volume level. It's not like the phone is a perfect conduit of sound...
I guess it would be like saying if someone fired a laser into a camcorder, it could cause eye damage to someone watching the tape later on a television.

my great aunt alway did the whistle thing. it's an annoyance, nothing more ;) i figured phones might have a decible cap, but wasn't sure and didn't know where to look it up...

:P it was a joke. Eh? What? Huh?
I have hearing issues because I work at an airport, play electric guitar in a rock band, and work as a DJ part time. :D
