so my ram is still not here, but
the main problem is that the mobo has a 24pin power connector but the power supply has a 20 pin connector ARGHHHHHHH this isn't going right

You bought an old power supply for a Pentium 3 and earlier. You need to get a P4 approved power supply. Dealsonic ahs good prices on cheaper units if you dont want to go with a high priced Antec.

The Antec True550 is compatible with Pentium 4 ATX standards... however the "old" P4 standard used a 20 pin layout and Burz's board now uses a 24 pin layout.

What you need is a 20 pin to 24 pin converter... Here's one that I found on a quick check on google: http://www.xpcgear.com/20to24pinatx.html
You can shop around to find if you can get a better deal.
Honestly, blame the mobo manufacturers for changing the spec... 20 pins was the standard previously... and now they go and change it. Geez.

ok i was doing reasearch as well and i came up with the same thing
the 24pin is ATX 2.0, and the converter is not a great idea because it draws way too much power from the 12v rail. Now i can plug the 20pin into the 24pin connector without using a conerter that's a safer choice, but i have way too many perupherals plus the upcomming pci express video card and this can result in instability due to insuficient power. I will call newegg and scream at them tomorrow for listing the mobo imporperly it's listed as atx not atx 2.0, what i will be getting instead is Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-550 ATX12V 550W Power Supply ... newegg has pretty good customer service so i don't think it should be a problem

Exactly which Truepower 550 did you buy? Did you buy the TruePower 2.0 (which does have a 24 pin 12v lead?) it costs about $110 plus $6.99 shipping at Newegg

as i posted in my previous post i will be buying the trupower II, or rather exchanging it for the older one that they sent me.. and the only reason i got the older one in the first place is because the customer support guy at new egg said that they are compatible

burz, computers rarely use more than 250watts. Your PS is rated for more than 500 watts, so your not going to have ANY power troubles... I swear!

burz, computers rarely use more than 250watts. Your PS is rated for more than 500 watts, so your not going to have ANY power troubles... I swear!
Well.. with a GeForce 6800 and 5 Hard Drives (and 2 optical drives)... I'm sure that I'm using a good portion of that 500 watts of power. :heh:

i didn't talk to them, actually newegg does not provide any tech advice. The thing is both the mobo and the power supply are listed as ATX, the mobo should be listed either as ATX 2.01 or ATX12V since the True power 2 power supply is listed as ATX12V

I have a 550watt antec true control with 20 pin and it works fine with my DFI ultra D and 6800GT. You just have to run one power lines to the pci-e card and not run anything else on that line. Lot's of people doing this right now.
If you want one of the best ps there is at decent price, these guys have them on sale every once in a while. And if you can find them on pricewatch you can save around $10 and get free shipping with it. Seasonic > Antec.

+ depends on if the hub is active or passive (active provides own power)
either way usb provides at most 2.5 watts a port * 8 = 20 watts
+ firewire (provides a max of 15 watts per port) * 3 = 45
+ external hard drive has its own ps usually
+ scanner has its own ps usually

Question... it's not the wattage thats really the problem is it? Isn't it the amps? The amount of amps that each rail has and how the load is distributed.

My experience with amplifiers say... it's always better to have more than you need, thus you don't overwork the unit.

BTW... most of those "so called" 500w supplies will NEVER actually put out that much. Kinda like those Pyramid amps that claim that they can do 1000 - 1500 watts of power (maximum distortion more like it. :heh: )

That ps in my link would be plenty for you and is quiet. Check pricewatch for links to ewiz and every once in a while they have them on the cheap. Company has a fairly good rep and I think they have some kind of partnership going with seasonic.

But did you address the Amperage issue above...
You can't just go by the watts... Are there a bunch of 400W P/S that do 40 amps on the 12V rail? How much do they cost and who makes them... if you can find one?
I'm getttin the impression that you are really stuck on the 500+ watt thing? Power supply envy maybe? :shrug:
