We recently went through this. From what we read, it is not the best idea to paper (or pad) train a puppy, as then they get the idea that indoors (on the paper/pad) is the place to go. This will prolong real house training. The best way (in the opinion of experts we read) is to crate-train. Use a carrier large enough so the pup can move around, but not large enough to give all kinds of extra room. Dogs naturally want to avoid soiling their sleeping area, so it give you the opportunity to be in control. Also remember that a pup can only hold "it" for about one hour per month of age. Have them in their crate, and take them outside to do their business. Give immediate rewards (treats and praise) when they do it outside.

Try to keep the pup in a limited area (one room or a hall) at other times. Clean all mistakes with a deodorizer made to eliminate any residual odor (get it from a pet supply store).

Cut off food and water at about 7pm to help the pup not have to go as much at night. You can either use the crate and take the pup out every 3 (or so) hours during the night (not a very pleasant option - too much like having a new baby) or leave the crate door open so that the pup can eliminate if necessary (in the enclosed room) - however, this will slow the training process.

One thing to note: the pup's crate can become his "safe place" - don't make it a punishment. Our dog (now about 6 months old) really loves sleeping in his crate.

awww congrats!!
i love puppies...i remember when my little marshmallow was a little puppy...
well, from my experience, it took a good month or two...be VERY paitent.
the peepeepads really work, and are great.
i let my dog run around wherever she wanted, but when she does accidents, you need to let the dog know that its bad, and be stern. Then take her to the pad.
after a few times, she quickly caught on.
good luck! let us know how it goes

:stupid: I heard crate training is definitely the best method for dog training all the way around.

www.talkpets.com helped a lot

i remember what we did was to take the puppy out 15/30 mins after he drank water. then as he's outside, we kept repeating "go peepee". then when he finally did his thing, we'd reward him and take him back in. i remember the site said something like "don't let the doggie back in until he does his biz". after a couple of weeks, he learned right away

The pet trainer at Petmart (where i got the puppy) also told me to crate train it. She said it might take as up to 1 month to properly train it to be potty trained. She also said what Markel said. Take the pup out of the crate when it needs to do its business. The trainer also said I can do it with the pee pee pads. Since my pup will be staying inside most of the time, I'll train it to do the pee pee pad and later on train it to go outside. I'm pretty sure there won't be harm on that, i hope. I'm hoping since I'll be attending the free puppy class I'll get the most out of the class.

The trainer has been training my friends dog for about a year now and I think she's been doing a great job with my friends dog.

Well as promised...here a couple of pictures.

Mines the Pom and Grayhound mix[ Pork Chop (white one), about 2-3 months old] and the other Pom ( Tata, 1 year old as of today) is my friends.

That puppy is adorable!!! I think the advice Markel gave is the best way to go. Just be consistent with the puppy and you will do fine!

We crate trained our puppy and then trained her to use a litter box. Works great except we have to clean the litter every week.

Beats me...But thats what the trainer said. The trainer is a friend of the owner who owns the puppy.

Still beats me how it can be a grey and pom mix. One big dog and small...

Just looking for a little advice really. Has anyone tried the Dog Training Guide? I've read the site page and it says they send you 12 chapters from the guide via email over the period of 12 weeks. Not sure how good the information is though, don't want to waste my time. I might just sign up anyway because it's free. Anyone used it?

The site is IHateSpammers.com , for anyone that wants to check it out and report back.

Look forward to the replies,
