it's a general gamer thing, coming mostly from FPS's I'd imagine.
No clue exactly where it started before that though. I'm pretty certain "pwned" came from Counterstrike due mass spelling errors :)

the phrase "I own you" has been said long before Counterstrike ever came out.

Basically owned (or pwned by the l33t crews) is a nicer way of sayin'... "j00 my b@tch and I'll have my way with you however I like". :D

Sigh...kids these days and their refusal to do research.
Owned- This originates from the days of the Spanish Armada in the 16th century. In the summer of 1588, King Philip II of Spain sent the Great Armada, or armed fleet, to conquer England. That "great enterprise" was the result of Spain's battle for world supremacy in religion, trade and territory. Unfortunately, Phillip's plan was foiled when his vast, expensive army of ships was defeated by an outmanned British fleet. Thus, Spain lost the battle for supremacy in all three categories, fading quickly from the world stage. A young Francis Drake's journal at the time noted, "Dude u r weak! Lolz owned!"
