Who else is going to be playing this when they turn on the servers tonight at midnight? Everything I've read about this sounds great. A no fee MMORPG, plus innovative gameplay. Can't go wrong with that, so I picked up my copy on my lunch break. Anyone play in the beta?

Off of the FAQ at guildwars.com
Will there be a subscription fee for Guild Wars? Are there any other fees, such as for patches or updates?
There will not be a subscription fee of any kind, anywhere in the world and there are no hidden fees. You will not have to pay for the streaming updates that will take place on a regular basis, nor for additional content that we will provide between the chapters of Guild Wars.

Had fun with the betas, and tried logging into the game tonight (I preordered the game, so I have early access).
For some reason, things are a tad choppy on my XPS2 laptop at 1680x1050 resolution, and the system actually restarted itself (not sure if it was a bluescreen Windows error or not.
.......hopefully that was just a one-time glitch.
[EDIT] Nope, not a bluescreen -- I do have the option to "automatically reboot" disabled.

Cant find the box and preorder.... Duh, it's all in the box! Now wheres the box? The game is for sale at frys, right? Hopefully they have it marked down $10 like usual. Either way Im in ASAP.
Lets all go the same server if possible. It's good to have some friends in these things.
I'm going to call myself Legolas. Ha ha j/k. Well unless the name is open and then... :shifty:
Btw, who plays and knows the easiest class/combo to play or the most effective. I beta'd for a few hours and have no idea. Tank or archer preferrably.

On sale for $40 at Frys in Anaheim, CA. I lost my preorder receipt, but the cashere said I could bring in both for the price adjustment.
What server, CAnt? I know you want to play D&D with your good friend the jelster.
Who else is in?
FYI, you can also instantly play uber characters for dueling. You cant use them for adventuring though. The characters you build up, you can use for either.

I played for about 5 hours. I got through the intro portion of the game where you learn basic skills and go on preliminary adventures. Great graphics, fun gameplay. I made a mistake on not doing enough side quests so that when i left the training thing my guy was kinda under powered but hopefully I can deal.

Not bad... got to level 5 ranger. No sub yet cuz I couldn't figure out which one to go with. Most likely Illusionist... I have a big pussy cat for a pet.
Warrior/Monk is the most popular and easiest from what I read. Rangers supposedly suck but whatever. I don't know what server they threw me on. The game just started after I loaded it and there I was. Nice graphics. Still a little buggy but not too bad.
I don't know how much time I'll have to play this weekend. Lots of stuff I'm supposed to do. ;)

So...what makes this game great? Unfortunately, I haven't kept up with this game.
If this game gets big, how is this company going to pay their server fees? I don't understand how they plan to do this and make profit. When you think about what happened with World of Warcraft and how much money the had to spend on extra servers.... bah, I just think this is going to be too good to be true.
Cantacuzene
04-30-2005, 09:39 PM
Actually its pretty ingenious. Most of the game is instanced, which dramatically cuts down on the bandwidth they need to use.

so.... how does this game compare with WOW?
Cantacuzene
05-09-2005, 12:23 PM
I've been playing a lot now. Lvl 19 now, probably about 75% of the way through the game.
This game doesn't compare to WOW, they are almost two different genres. This is like two games in one. On one hand you have a traditional roleplaying adevnture game, with the added bonus of being able to play with real people in your group and go to towns with real people to chat and trade with. Imagine Diablo 2 but instead of lobbies you have actual graphical towns that you can run around in.
On the other side you have a competetive 6 on 6 pvp combat game using your macked out characters from the roleplaying part after you finish. I haven't done that yet since I'm still working on the roleplayign part.
This game has interesting features, that you will either love or hate. First, there is a level cap at 20. This means you get to the max level about 24 hours into the game and thats it. This keeps people who play the game 24/7 for a year from being unstoppable gods. But then again, there are players whose joy in life is playing MMOs for months and being a nerd-god. This makes it different in style of play from every other mmo: no grind.
So what keeps it from being a 3d Diablo clone then? The game reduces emphasis on crazy powerful loot drops. While you will get cool rare items to drop like in every game, unlike Diablo you will never get (or craft) a one hit kill godlike item. Obviously a guy with a rare unique sword will beat a guy with a normal one, but in this game getting a rare, unique item is pretty easy, and it doesn't convey the advantage that it does in a game like diablo.
What the game does emphasize is skills/powers/spells. Of all the spells your character has you can only use 8 at a time. Thus, when you go on a quest you have to pick wisely and anticipate what your party needs and what you can do. Also, getting new powers come from completing quests, not leveling, and to get the rare powers you have to explore areas off the beaten path. Also, some of the great powers are only gettable by stealing them from bosses who use them, which requires you to actually complete the difficult parts of the main quest.
So really its a game about saving time and balance. If you have been put off from MMOs in the past because of money, time and not fun balance issues this may be the game for you.

Lvl 14 ranger-elem. I play a couple of hours a night, depending. I read somewhere that game really begins when you get to lvl 20. I don't know what that means.... but so far it's been pretty entertaining. The storyline is adequate at this point. The scenery is good and this is one of the few games that has a 1650x1080 res and perfectly fits my ws. I haven't tried pvp yet. I wanted to max out once 1st and see if it was worth building a pvp.
I need a new bow (27+) and some other junk, since your lvl 19.... Thanks C!

Haha, I don't have many items to trade or give away. I do have some sword/axe/staff hilts and pommels if you need those. I sell pretty much anything I don't need immediatly since the upper level armor is ridiculously expensive and I'm constantly having to spend all my cash making steel to craft the next gen armor.

You're a ranger, so that means you are in the never ending quest for Fur Squares. Good luck with that. Fur Square shortages are the number 1 reason why I wouldnt want to play a warrior or ranger.
Warrior is even worse, since you need both fur and steel to make armor which is like a double whammy.

Im doing ok and I might just wait till 20 for the good armor.
4+ platinum bars so far. Plus another few by the time I hit 15 and my inventory. Speaking of which, should I keep all higly salvageable blue items until I get the better salvage kits or just use the crappy kit. I found 2 purple items but the stats are just ok imo. Keep or sell? Room is becoming a big issue for me. Any way to get more space?
-j
Cantacuzene
05-09-2005, 02:41 PM
Depends on the purple item. If its a crappy bow and you are a ranger, you might want to salvage it and hopefully get bow string or bow grip upgrades.
Showtime
05-09-2005, 02:54 PM
Nope, it is a brute sword and a staff, I think. Does the salvaging work with all magical weopons. I mean should I try with all the crappy magical bows I find?

05-09-2005, 05:16 PM
Yup. I'd use expert salvaging kits on the magic stuff.
Showtime
05-09-2005, 06:34 PM
The item has to say salvageable on it, correct? I can't salvage any magical, purple or rare item I find can I? Sorry about all the questions. Not much time for this game and I try to get a quest or a mission a night or more so I don't want to be wasting all my resources. How much gold/platinum do you have, btw?
-j
Cantacuzene
05-09-2005, 08:00 PM
You can salvage anything. Infact, salvaging axes and hammers with an expert kit is a good source of steel.
I don't have any platinum, don't know what you even do with it. I had 5700 gold at one point before I bought new armor.

I thought the big bar was a platinum bar. So many details I havent paid attention to. I had a purple staff.... Should have given it to you instead of using expert salvage. I got some crap out of it. Finally got some steel today.

hmm so are people liking this game? i need to take a break from WoW for a bit. Getting burnt out. We kill onyxia in 30 minutes, and are going to face Ragnaros on wed, so not much left there.
I kinda want something without the grind that i can play casually. WoW was casual till 60, now its grinding for items.
Your synopsis Cant made it seem interesting.
Showtime
05-12-2005, 01:07 PM
I'd say give it a go.
There are 2 or 3 parts to the game/story. Searing and pre-searing and pvp. In pre searing you can run around solo and learn some basic skills and check out the landscape in a few hours. You can also do some pvp in the arenas. In searing mode, you want to find a party or join a guild and go level up, obtain money and resources. I think level 20 is obtainable in a solid weekends worth of play. Fri night - Sunday, but the key is to find good groups to party with and to run through it. Your supposed do all the missions a couple of times. Do each one once and if it gets too hard, go and back do the earlier missions. The sidequests give decent exp and most aren't too difficult.
It's been fun, I may or may not get the expansion when it hits. Pvp and clan wars are supposed to be the best part of the game. I haven't done too much, but my char isn't really dialed in yet. Lvl 16 and I should hit 20 sometime this weekend depending on how much time I have to waste.

Jihforce
06-08-2005, 11:06 AM
Yeah its not meant to be liek WoW. Like i said, its more like diablo. The cities are used as chatrooms basically. each mission is a private session so its ok.
I have a Elemental/Mesmer at level 11, Level 6 Mesmer/Ranger and Level 6 Warrior/Elemental. Yeah I couldn't makup my mind for some reason, so i wanted to try different characters. Didn't really like monks or necro skills for some reason.
I'm usually on at night around 10pm-12am. Which is only enough time for one or two quests. If you decide to hope on, that would be the best time. My main character's name is Kyren Drakeson, so shoot me a whisper if you happen to be online. I play with 2 other guys that are also level 11. One is a warrior/monk, another is a ranger/necro. I think we might get together and run a few quests tonight as a matter a fact.

I finished factions. I didn't do a lot of the quests and stuff because the beginning part really sucked imo. Stupid maze... going to one place, then to another and back again. The game got better after that and I might go back and do some exploring. PVP is pretty fun and is where this game trumps WoW.
If you are starting out... Monks are still the most sought after for parties. After that are the Necro Minion Masters and then Wars, but there are tons of them.
I still do a mission every so often so if anyone wants to do something in either prophecies or factions, mssg me here or ig. Note: Sometimes other people use my account so it might not be me.
