Three tiger cubs were born from a pair of tigers that came from a zoo in Thailand. But the mother refused to nurse her young and ate one of her babies. Veterinarians rescued the remaining two and tried to feed them milk from a bottle, but without much success.

"They (cubs) find some difficulties in sucking the nipple on the bottle, but when we tried to get the cubs to suck a lady's breast, it was all right," said a Yangon Zoo veterinarian.

So Hla Htay, 40, a mother of three, began feeding the cubs. The process takes about 45 minutes, she said.

"It's not scary at all," she said. "I thought I needed to do something for the cubs because I felt really sorry for them."

The cubs seem to have forgotten their real tiger mother and believe that Hla Htay is their mother now.

"The cubs are just like my babies," added Hla Htay.

The zoo says the arrangement will continue until the end of April.

The cubs will have to go back to the bottle when they grow too strong and start to teethe.

The Bengal tiger is listed as endangered on the World Conservation Union's red list, with the global population estimated at fewer than 2,500.

here's a question, can human female breasts produce milk on demand? i've always thought that it's only immediately after birth of a child ...

and i still will, thank you :P

i know, ewww. but quite honestly, i'd do it for the right price. :kaching: breast milk sells for $5 an ounce. it's not enough to make it worth it for me to put up with that kind of a pain in the butt, but to breastfeed two baby tigers for a month... hmmm. i'd do it for... i dunno. not for $1000. definitely for $10,000.

and this is not unprecedented. in the third world, a woman might breastfeed an animal whose mother has died, if that animal is important to the well-being of her family.

also, in one of those wonderful old (100+ years) home health reference books i inherited, the instructions for a woman to get ready for breastfeeding include toughening up the nipples... by letting puppies suck on em  helpful diagram included. ahhh, early american medicine... so scary... yet also amusing...

yes. women who adopt and wish to breastfeed can do so, given enough time to prepare. all it takes is the hormone pitocin, which is released into the tissues when the nipples are stimulated. it takes 6-8 months of regular pumping to build up enough mammary tissue to have a good supply (which is the same time frame as a pregnancy, of course.)

with a few hormone injections, men can do the same thing. them nipples o yours ain't quite vestigial :P

Don't think we are fooled into think that you wax for us males.

Besides, you can shave your nipples. All the beni's of no hair, without all the pain of waxing :)

So can we count on you to breastfeed when you have kids?

The hormones the women will get automatically when they get pregnant so I don't see the need for men to get hormone injections in an attempt to produce milk so we can breastfeed. However, if my wife was having trouble producing the milk or for some reasonable reason doesn't want to breastfeed, I would be willing to go through that so that my child could get the benefit of breastfeeding.

I don't mind the funbags I have currently

Of course, I don't want children so that completely negates everything after that though.

dude, if you don't have kids, you eventually run out of people to watch saturday morning cartoons with while eating breakfast cereal that you've done interesting things to (ie, microwave, choc syrup, etc.) trust me on this one. :dodgy:

You'd be surprised of how little those holes are...

This whole topic reminds me of Greg Fokker talking about milking a cat. :heh:

I just saw the family guy where peter gets in touch with his feminine side. The scene where he tries to breastfeed stewie is classic.
