I was wondering if anyone knows why you can take a screenshot of a video playing via the PrintScrn button, and if you could explain. For example, if you playback something in Quicktime, and take a PrintScrn, the place where the video was is a blue box. Is there any software (preferably for Linux) which allows you to take a screen shot (that's independent of the video player)?
Thanks!

i know that in windows media player 9, you could pause the video and use the print screen button like that. i think you had to pause, minimize the window, then restore the window again, and THEN hit the printscrn. i've done that a couple times before. i'm not sure about quicktime tho.

If it doesn't have to be a seperate program, you can play the video in WMP and hit CTRL+I whenever you wanna capture a frame.

:-/ I'm actually running a program in Linux which has a video interface, and i want a screen shot (hence the reason i need a seperate program).

The reason is due to hardware acceleration. The video rendering is done on the video card and the output is injected directly into the VGA stream. The solid color is the placeholder for where the image is going to go.
