2.5 cars per person? Are you serious?
Do you mean 2.5 persons per car?

Just did some quick checking for numbers-
Department of Transportation estimates 228 million vehicles (cars and motorcycles- not trucking or busses or the like)
and says there are 196 million licensed drivers for 2003.
Population of people over 18 (most likely to be drivers) is reported to be 217 million.
Some other sources give higher figures for the number of cars.
So there are more cars than drivers.

traffic here in LA is bad enough to lead to suicide/homicide...Im just glad im not one of those people who have to deal with it because of their job hours but even me who tries to avoid leaving the house at rush hour i still get hit with loads of traffic in LA, there really are no specific hours for rush hour, its rush hour all day
personally I think we need to put more effort and money into expanding freeways and building a better subway system, the one we have now blows, it goes nowhere, it doesnt even go to LAX, and they wonder why no one ever rides it.

It's good that I only use local streets to commute btw home & work. It still takes me around 20-25 minutes to drive less than 6 miles. :(

it takes me 90 minutes to travel 30 miles one way. That's 20 mph average speed. I wish they built the subway so there was a connecting ring and not just the spokes and the center in DC.

I have the solution, but of course like all the things they promised would be here in the year 2000. No jetpacks. WTF? Why? Where the hell is my jetpack? I want one! Now!

Yeah I work about 2 miles from home and I don't have to take any freeways to get there. I can't stand sitting in traffic. At all. I refuse to drive on the freeways during rush hour. I'd rather be sitting at home staring at the wall.

i'm not sure what's better. being stuck in a car in rush hour or being crowded in a subway during rush hour. both have their own pros and cons. comfort wise: car. price/time wise: subway.

Well if we had jetpacks, we would be stuck in air traffic.....

I've always thought that widening freeways will never be enough. You need to revolutionize the way people think about moving around. I've always thought really fast ski lifts were a good way to travel. Have everyone driving cars with removable cockpits, park and have one of the "freeway 2 (tm)" hooks grab your cockpit and sort you into the "traffic tube (tm)". This tube works sorta based on the vacuum tube systems that they used to use at banks. The drag of all the collective cars would be a tiny fraction of the drag of the individual cars reducing power consumption. At the end of the "freeway 2 (tm)" you get put into another car and drive to work. All you pay is a monthly fee for unlimited exocar rentals.
Rethink networks.

You're right. There is an area of economics that studies such things and the general conclusion is that bigger roads tend to attract more people and the congestion persists.

I've heard the same thing, but I wonder if the roads are widened and there are no new homes or businesses, why would the amount of cars using the roads increase.

New homes and businesses will pop up in the outskirts. And then you have them driving through as well.
