I picked up a rug from Overstock recently and it kinda smells. I put some rug freshener and vaccumed it up, but now it smells like bad with flowers on top. Should it smell this way? The rug is manufactured in India.
Help a guy out who just bought his first non-used rug.

well, unless you got a really really nice rug, it should be polyester, and polyester isnt supposed to smell...silk has a smell, and so does wool...
if fabreeze doesnt do the job, throw it in the wash.

It's wool. If I can get my digicam from work I will snap a picture of it and post it. I would post the link from Overstock but it looks like I snagged the last one (lucky me :puke: )

I know it's hindsight but I don't think I would have put anything on it quite yet. Sometimes those things are packed up for a while and they need to be aired out for a while. Just let it breathe for a bit and the smell should dissipate. If it's not gone in a week, swap it.

I think Faither's right. You should probably hang it up outside for a little while to let it air out. The funk probably has something to do with the way it was packed to ship to you.

garments, carpets and any thing made of fibers of any kind are treated with chemicals prior to shipment from the motherland..india, sri lanka and malaysia are the major offenders- they use alot of formaldehyde based treatments-it does go away after airing out-or washing if a garment. i guess the chemicals hinder mildew growth and is for parasite control. i have a friend who is a designer in ny and when she got me some fabrics for a big project-i learned it then cause everything stunk.

Quit sniffing your rug and go back to sniffing paint.

speaking of.... i just found out something about India... well, what they do there in lieu of tp. :gle:
the rug: is it washable? can you take it to a laudromat and put it in one of their big machines? if not, i agree with the febreeze - that is good stuff. it got the puke smell out of my car seat when my "friend" had an accident in my car.
douse the rug good with febreeze and hang outside to dry.

Thanks everyone. I am airing it out again now. I cannot throw it in the wash because it is 5 x 8 and heavy. Hopefully some more air will freshen it up.
