Sometimes it pays to read the Dell troublshooting forums... in my case for a Dimension 3000 with a noisy fan (which was fixed within 24 hours!!!).
I never found anything on the '3000, but a LOT on the XPS - which I have. I think to myself - no ****! 3 big fans, blowing like mad when the CPU and room temp both go up. Problem - a batch of bad heat sinks (bum heat pipes).
So I call Dell... next morning a tech comes out - new heatsink in the box, and sheezam - it's a quiet PC for the first time. Ahhhhhhhhh! Again, within 24 hours too. Never talked to anyone in India either.
This isn't right...but who cares - it doesn't suck!
