it's def not performance enhancing. while i have never been high i don't think smoking pot should be enough to get you suspended like onterrio smith just did.

I guess cause they have an image to uphold and also maybe because it's ILLEGAL?

Yeah, I think it has more to do with that. Also, if their testing is anything like the NBA's, you'd have to be an idiot to fail the test. In the NBA, you get like a 3 week advance notice that your drug test is coming. Pot takes AT MOST two weeks to get out of your system, and it's out of your urine much quicker than that...so of course they urine test them. ;)

i know it's illegal, that's why i don't do it. but they don't care if the players are cheating on their taxes or pirating music.

Good point. I think this is pretty dumb.

my company does random drug testing. But why should it matter? they don't care if i cheat on my taxes (unless i get caught), or pirate music (unless i get caught). And what the heck. it doesn't enhance my performance at work...so why should they care?

For your company, they probably care because if you make a mistake while you have drugs in your system (or even if you were just weird and people could question if you have drugs in your system) and your company gets taken to court because of your mistake it's nice to be able to say that you were tested on this and this date and you were clean.
For the NFL, if they don't at least give the facade that they care enough to do drug testing then the feds. will step in and do it. At least if they are doing the testing they can warn their players and maybe even bury a couple of bad tests from their most popular players.

Image is important for pro sports teams, and the media tends to go nuts when a player does something stupid. I imagine if someone, esp. a high profile player, gets busted doing something illegal it will be all over the news. Doesn't matter if he's smoking pot, smacking his wife around, or downloading MP3s on the internet.

I don't think Miami likes the fact that Ricky Williams has lost all desire to play but took all their dough
