It was brought up on another board that I watch (don't post on it) about how they were placing products in scenes and the actors would mention it. Example hair color and the actress would mention the brand and why they had it. It flows.
So, my question is this. With tivo/replay tv being the new vcr, do you see this as a new trend to get products advertised to the masses? I remember Pepsi in the back to the future trillogy and others on the big screen, but not much on the smaller screen.

Yes. Since many of us either mute the tv, change the channel, or have our recorders leave out the commercials, this would be the only way for them to advertise products on TV.
It reminds me of the humourous scenes in "The Truman Show" where they were attempting to use product placement. It also reminds me of Wayne's World :hihi:

Yes, TiVo and the general cynicism towards traditional advertising is certainly part of the reason . . . I could go on for far longer than anybody would probably care to sit and read about the issue . . . it's part of my stinkin' job . . . but I don't really have the heart for it at the moment . . . stuck at work.

I believe marketing lead to the eventual downfall of our society.

Absolutely.
Hopefully the content isn't overly compromised by the inspiration to make a few more advertising bucks ...(ha). Nevertheless it seems like this is the direction that advertising is headed to, but like you mentioned, has sort of been around just not really "in your face" all the time.
To go along with your big screen + soft drink reference I'll mention a small screen + soft drink reference... observe all the judges in American Idol have their vibrant red Coca Cola cups sitting out in front of them all the time. (at least they did during the prelim judging, I haven't watched since then).
Watching it in HD, the red cups were pratically calling "drink me, drink coke" because nothing else on the set (at that time, at least) was anywhere near as red.
Pretty effective advertising if you ask me.
