So Saturday, the girlfriend and I went to the Humane Society Animal Shelter (No Kill Shelter) looking for a cat. We didn't find any cats that fit the type of personality we were looking for, but we managed to find two kittens that were perfect. One was a Male, Orange with white stripes and feet. The other was Female and Calico. Both from the same litter.

While we were deciding if we wanted to get both kittens, they asked us if they could take the kittens off hold until we decide. So we put the paperwork in on Saturday after making the decision to get both kittens (paperwork went in about an hour after we got there) and asked to have the kittens put on hold for approval.

They said it would be no later than Thursday that they would call us. They close at 4pm. Thursday rolls around, I call at 3:30pm and they tell us we are approved for both kittens (they call the landlord and previous vets). They then proceed to tell us that the Calico has been adopted.

Someone put in paperwork for the Calico AFTER us and got the kitten before we were even told we were approved. I had to call to find out we were approved.

So after much deliberation, we will be getting the Orange Male, but we are going to go looking at other shelters to get another kitten. We didn't want to get one kitten, wanted to get both so they had each other while we were out of the apartment at work / school.

After all this, they tried to pin it on us because we took so long to decide if we wanted the kittens (a whole hour) and will absolutely not apologize for f*cking up so badly. They are still trying to blame it on us.

I am absolutely appalled at this. I can say we will never be using the Humane Society Animal Shelter (http://civic.bev.net/hsmc/) again.

sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience with them. it may be just that one shelter because everytime we've dealt with a Humane Society shelter they've been great. We've adopted a 5 dogs and 2 cats in our family over my lifetime, all from the Humane Society.

I'm sorry you got screwed on the adoption. Yes, they messed up.

But I'm not crazy about the post title and link to the shelter.

They are a non-profit. They don't compete with fortune 500 companies to hire the best talent or work efficient business processes, so stuff like this is not too uncommon. Their job is to get abandoned animals in homes. While they screwed up, totally, the kitten still has a new home and that is what is most important.

Congrats on your new kitty and I'm glad that you are still going the shelter route.

Here in Lakeside, California , they have an organization called Friends of Cats. You might try and see if there is one in your area. Makes it a little easier and less confusion because it is only cats.

maybe they get a lot of people who come in and get paperwork on a pet and then never return so they are just skiddish about that, and saw this other person as a sure bet for adopting that kitten.

but i can understand your frustration, and i would be upset if i planned on adopting both kittens and they did that to me, too.
i don't see why they won't apologize. they must see you were sincere about adopting these kittens, and they were hasty.

But I'm not crazy about the post title and link to the shelter.

I understand that they are non profit, and I understand that the underlying point is that the kitten found a home.

What I have a problem with is the people who work there. I shouldn't go to a place that houses living animals and expect them to handle their business operations poorly and without regard to the customers.

This thread, in all honesty, would never have been made had they simply said, "We are sorry for the inconvenience and it's our fault" or something along those lines. It's not about the fact that we didn't get the kitten, it's about how we were treated.

That thread benefits EVERYONE on this board in Southwest Virginia (me) that might go there. Helps to know they're not too organized.

I agree with you there. They should owe you an apology.

I just don't want to see shelters slammed because they provide a valuable service in providing homeless pets with new homes.

Dang cute kitty you got there!

Jeez, you've had the kitten for what, a day? And already you're throwing it in the trash? This is why they didn't give you the other kitten. ;)
