Can anyone recommend a good portable hard drive that doesn't require a seperate power supply, meaning it is powered directly from a USB2.0 or firewire?

How much storage do you need...

My Lexar JumpDrive holds 1 GB of data and pretty much acts as a "portable drive" for my network (and it doesn't require a power supply :D )

I'm looking for a large storage solution. 80-100GBs. I like that seagate drive, but it's too small.

I'm looking at the Lacie Portables or the Western Digital Passports. They're in the range of 80-100Gbs.

Well I personally don't know of any current solution that gives that much storage without a power supply.

apparently these two don't need a power supply...as they only run from the USB2...

I saw another that had TWO USB plugs, in case your computer doesn't provide enough power with one, you can plug it in another USB port which only provides power...

very interesting...

edit: just read your 80-100gb thing. How portable does it need to be? You could pickup a 2.5" enclosure and Seagate 100GB Momentus 2.5" drive.

The key to "portable" is the no power supply part. I don't want to have to plug in the drive to a power cable to get it to work...

Then yea. Just pickup a 2.5" enc. Most of them can be powered by the usb port.

Yeap a 2.5" hard drive with an external 2.5" enclosure would work. My co-worker has a 2.5" 60GB hard drive in a 2.5" enclosure without power supply but it uses two USB 2.0 ports.

the problem with 'no power supply' external drive is that they tend to corrupt the data in large file tranfers - say, your music collection. Also, because they tend to read slower, large folders can take forever to index. Most 2.5 usb drives with no power supply are better for smaller file transfers, in that regard.

:stupid: I'd recommend getting one that has the transformer in the case that way you are just carrying a power cable. Or atleast has the transformer mid-cable so it is easier to plug into a power strip that is loaded.
