George Mikan, considered one of, if not, the greatest big man/player died today. This Laker great, led the Lakers to 5 championships and was literally the 1st basketball superstar.
RIP George and thanks for help building the foundation of the NBA and the Lakeshow.

it's so wrong that the NBA is stiffing the old timers on their pensions.

after hearing a lot of the coverage of his death, I'm bummed that I never got to see him play. maybe they'll run some stuff on ESPN Classic. By all accounts it sounds like he was an amazing player to watch.

Shaq is paying for the funeral. Might not fix the damage he did by dissing us L.A. fans, but it was decent of him and good PR.

Shaq is a class act. He should still be with the Lakers! I would've dumped the "Problem Child".

Why would you want that? Then the Lakers might have had a chance to win the Championship while undergoing the process of rebuilding.

:nono:
Shaq came to camp out of shape 2 years in a row and demanded a raise. He rehabbed during the season instead of the offseason even though he knew it would hurt our record. He demanded 30 million a year so that we could go the playoffs and what....lose in the 2nd or 3rd round each year? He shows up in Miami in shape and disses the city/people of L.A. because he has beef with Kobe and Jerry Buss? That is far from a class act and ultimately he will lose out more than anyone else. Cuz he aint getting another ring. Remember, the championship teams were assembled and paid for by Buss. Shaq will have to go into the hall as a Laker, because of the 3 rings.
I still think keeping Kobe for around half of what you would pay Shaq is a better move. Kobe remains a top 5 player and is a known clutch regular season and playoff player. Our max player slot opens up after next season when Yao's contract is up. Kobe is no worse than a ton of other superstars in various sports and has a few seasons to bring another title here. If we had kept Shaq, he would still be asking for a raise and still be out of shape and not wanting to play with Kobe.
So called bb experts always seem to miss human/shaq nature when they talk about the trade. You cant keep a superstar who doesn't want to be there. You can't get equal value for him. You dont want him anywhere in the west. So you make the best trade you can.

He's a lot closer to getting another ring this season than Kobe is.

Jel... when did you change your screen name?
Changed it on my 6000th post. Been wanting to for a while since I found out it was available. The meaning of my old name required an explanation and my friend thought I was jiggly. ;) Which I can be but dont want to be percieved as such. :P
I was going to do thread, but I thought no one would care.
How many posts until my stars start to blink? Maybe I'll do it then.
