The years from 1979 to 1993? I barely see them on the road anymore. And when I do, it looks like they have been well taken care of or restored.
Did insurance rates kill them? Do younger people prefer modified imports?
Considering the few that are on the road, where are the ones that are not? They are definitely not in junk yards, because I spent a year looking for an engine out of an '89 to '93, and finally stumbled onto one a month ago.
Are older people keeping them in their garage awaiting the day that they can restore them? I just can't figure this one out.

Now that I think of it, I haven't seen many in a while either. Strange. I was never a big fan of that body style, though. To me, it didn't look all that muscular or "Mustangly."

yeah, totally with houdini... they did not look like a mustang.... more like just an average hatchback.
if they're not in jukyards...well, maybe they just didn't sell all that well.

A Theory:
Many of the GT (V8) versions were wrecked, blown up, or abused into oblivion. The V6 'stangs of that era had chronic headgasket problems (which put them into the boneyard) and the four-bangers were also looked at as "throwaway" cars.
The Fox-body Mustang GT was an "entry-level muscle car" so they saw a LOT of abuse.
But, like Dennis Miller says, that's just my opinion.

Sorry, i meant to say 1979. But, isn't the same platform used from 1979 to 2004? What were the 94-04s called?
Found it, called "Fox-4". a modified fox platform, hence the confusion

I had an 86 GT with about 215,000 miles on an original motor. Thing would still get up and go, even right before I got rid of it. Was a very reliable car. Just had regular maintenance and changed a clutch once. It got me through high school and college.
I would guess that lot of these style cars have just seen their day. Alot of the people that used to drive them have either upgraded to a newer sports car or have changed car classes alltogether. I can definitely see myself getting an old stang again at some point in my life.
