Last week I had to take a friend to work. I was coming back on the Beeline expressway by the ORL airport. I accelerated out of the tolls around an old Civic and got ahead of a white Explorer. It was an undercover, he paced me at 75 in a 55.

Seconds before he flipped the lights on I knew I was in trouble. He also hit me for having MN tags in FL while I worked in FL, which is a criminal offense, yay.

So I had my court date today for the tag problem. Judge let me out of it since I registered and titled the car the next day. However, I had to pay the 205 ticket AND 220 in "court costs".

I don't mind getting busted for the tags or the speeding. But court costs? That is stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As someone that paid $300 to register my car in NV with OR plates that had another 1.5 years on them ... sorry. No sympathy here. :|

That sucks. I'm still driving with an out-of-state license, though my car is registered here in LA. I really need to get a V1 soon, as I was clocked a while back doing 45 in a 40 at midnight. The funny thing was that the officer didn't even approach my car at first. He just stood outside of his and yelled, "Hey Man!" Of course I couldn't see him b/c he was blinding me with dual spotlights. :rolleyes:No ticket. Just politely apologized with hands on the steering wheel but head turned to talk (or rather, yell) backwards out of my window and squinted. I think I also played the doctor card. But seriously...5 over at midnight? He had a rookie in the car with him and was showing him how to stop cars.

I rarely speed, though my car is easy to drive too fast. A V1 would save some of that aggravation. Insurance is too damn high in New Orleans to afford a hike.

Valentine 1 = the sweetest! Not speeding = it's like celibacy; it's a guarantee to work, but how much fun is that?

i'm in the market for a radar detector since I love gadgets and I'm moving out of VA (I think the only state in the union that bans radar detectors).

Btw I'm moving to NC for school. Do I still have to register my car with NC and get a NC drivers license?

If you're a student, you're exempt from changing your license as long as your permanent address is the one on your license. Remember, however, you get a ticket for anything and it goes home to mom and dad. :|

I had no problem shelling out to get registered. I had no problem getting a fine for not having it regsitered. I didn't know the law (nobody here knew that that was the case from the people I talked to) and I got busted for it, fine.

I got it all taken care of the next day, BFD.

I got a $205 ticket for speeding. I *WAS* speeding. Would I have liked it reduced? Sure, why not. However, I make the concious decision and it was against the law, I got busted for it and that is my fault.

HOWEVER, then I get slapped for a $220 "court cost" fee because they *MAKE* you go to court to settle the improper registration ticket because it is a "criminal" offense.

I sat there in court, in my nice pants, shirt, and tie, while repeat DUI's, double the speed limit, suspended drivers, hit-and-runs, and all sorts of deadbeat knuckle dragging drooling morons went through. Yet I get lumped in with them, somebody who pays taxes on time, doesn't cause many problems, and has never had to go to court before.

Why should I get charged 220 "court costs" for something that wasn't that bad?!?!

That is a lot of $$$.

I promise myself that I won't give the government anymore of my money in form of traffic tickets anymore. I now drive like grandpa with the traffic flow. :D

"A couple of years ago, we totally forgot to pay the tags on our car by September 30th. October 10th, my hubby was stopped by the highway patrol. October 11th, we went and paid them. He went to court a few days later, showed them that we paid, we STILL had to pay a $300 fine AND...He now has a misdemeanor on his driving record! OMG!"

You know, if there hadn't been a Judge around (who was quite nice), then I think it would have qualified. There were 4 Court officers there loaded for a war.

That almost happend to my brother. Well my mom got the new tabs on time, but somehow put both of them on the front of the car(in WA at the time needed front and back). So a cop pulled up behind him and saw expired tab, gave him a $300.00 ticket. Went to court, showed it was registered, got it dropped to I believe a "misproper display of tabs" for either 70ish or 120ish.

:stupid: Agreed.

That "court cost" is kind of stupid. It's the same in CA. There are signs all over that say "Carpool violation minimum fine $271" (it may have changed by now). Anyways, it turns out that a carpool ticket costs $100 and the court imposes a 171% penalty on top of traffic tickets -- which is where that number comes from. I guess they do it with all tickets.

Online registration rocks! I gladly paid the cred card "fee" that they have to save a trip to the DMV.

I actually just got stopped this morning doing 70 in a 55. I really wasn't paying attention to speed since my old car had cruise control (and I would keep it at 60 in this area). New car doesn't, and I just wasn't watching. Oh well.

Too bad radar detectors are illegal in Virginia.

You might want to move to Las Vegas. The cops tailgate you if you are travelling slower than 60 in a 45. ;)
