Activists Suspected in Flower Plantings
Published: Jun 07, 2005 8:14 AM EST

SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities are on the lookout for pistil-packing activists who apparently planted endangered wildflowers in order to block a housing development.

The state Department of Fish and Game has determined that Sebastopol meadowfoam discovered in the Laguna Vista subdivision in Sebastopol was deliberately transplanted from another location.

"This is a very unusual situation," said department botanist Gene Cooley. "I've never known a rare plant to be introduced to a site to thwart development before."

The 145-unit Laguna Vista site, which borders a Fish and Game preserve, has been hotly contested by environmentalists concerned about nearby wetlands.

State officials launched a criminal investigation last week to determine who planted the wildflower, listed by the state and federal governments as endangered, which can present major obstacles to development.

So far, there aren't any suspects. And not everyone agrees with the state's finding.

Phil Northen, a Sonoma State University conservation biologist who first identified the 22 plants spotted on the 21-acre site, said he didn't believe they were transplants.

What the heck is wrong with people, get over it and grow up. We have always destroyed things through all time, why stop now.

85-90% of these transplanted endangered plants are going to die from the move now there will be less remaining overall. How brilliant.

lol Funny.

But then again I would find it funny if the went and stomped on the flowers too, then built a house over them.

where did you get that number from?

also, there is some dispute as to whether they were transplanted or grew their naturally.

from here: http://www.sonomawest.com/articles/2005/05/18/sonomawest/news/nws-1.txt

Its pointed out in the article that "it is illegal to transplant an endangered plant without a permit, and transplanting one for the sake of interfering with a development permit process could also be criminal fraud."

It is quite suspicious that one of the leading opponents of this housing development who wasn't supposed to be on the development site found the endangered plants which suddenly showed up.

Well i would expect it to come from him, if anyone from the housing development found it theyd keep their mouths closed.

76% of statistics are changed by at least 16%,
80% of statistics are made up on the spot :]

"pistil-packing activists" - cute :P

they paved paradise and put up a parking lot. :guitar: thing of it is . . . if there really weren't endangered species/flowers there in the first place they really are creating false pretenses.
