Gregory Despres is shown in this image from television. On April 25, 2005, Despres arrived at the U.S.-Canadian border crossing at Calais, Maine, carrying chain saw stained with what appeared to be blood, a homemade sword, a hatchet, a knife, and brass knuckles.

June 07, 2005 9:54 PM EDT
BOSTON - On April 25, Gregory Despres arrived at the U.S.-Canadian border crossing at Calais, Maine, carrying a homemade sword, a hatchet, a knife, brass knuckles and a chain saw stained with what appeared to be blood. U.S. customs agents confiscated the weapons and fingerprinted Despres. Then they let him into the United States.

The following day, a gruesome scene was discovered in Despres' hometown of Minto, New Brunswick: The decapitated body of a 74-year-old country musician named Frederick Fulton was found on Fulton's kitchen floor. His head was in a pillowcase under a kitchen table. His common-law wife was discovered stabbed to death in a bedroom.

Despres, 22, immediately became a suspect because of a history of violence between him and his neighbors, and he was arrested April 27 after police in Massachusetts saw him wandering down a highway in a sweat shirt with red and brown stains. He is now in jail in Massachusetts on murder charges, awaiting an extradition hearing next month.

At a time when the United States is tightening its borders, how could a man toting what appeared to be a bloody chain saw be allowed into the country?

Bill Anthony, a spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said the Canada-born Despres could not be detained because he is a naturalized U.S. citizen and was not wanted on any criminal charges on the day in question.

Anthony said Despres was questioned for two hours before he was released. During that time, he said, customs agents employed "every conceivable method" to check for warrants or see if Despres had broken any laws in trying to re-enter the country.

"Nobody asked us to detain him," Anthony said. "Being bizarre is not a reason to keep somebody out of this country or lock them up. ... We are governed by laws and regulations, and he did not violate any regulations."

Anthony conceded it "sounds stupid" that a man wielding what appeared to be a bloody chain saw could not be detained. But he added: "Our people don't have a crime lab up there. They can't look at a chain saw and decide if it's blood or rust or red paint."

Sgt. Gary Cameron of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police would not comment on whether it was, in fact, blood on the chain saw.

On the same day Despres crossed the border, he was due in a Canadian court to be sentenced on charges he assaulted and threatened to kill Fulton's son-in-law, Frederick Mowat, last August.

Mowat told police Despres had been bothering his father-in-law for the past month. When Mowat confronted him, Despres allegedly pulled a knife, pointed it at Mowat's chest and said he was "going to get you all."

Police believe the dispute between the neighbors boiled over in the early-morning hours of April 24, when Despres allegedly broke into Fulton's home and stabbed to death the musician and 70-year-old Veronica Decarie.

Fulton's daughter found her father's body two days later. His car was later found in a gravel pit on a highway leading to the U.S. border. Despres hitchhiked to the border crossing.

After the bodies were found on the afternoon of April 26, police set up roadblocks and sent out a bulletin that identified Despres as a "person of interest" in the slayings, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The bulletin caught the eye of a Quincy police dispatcher because it gave the suspect's Massachusetts driver's license number, missing a character. The dispatcher plugged in numbers and letters until she found a last known address for Despres in Mattapoisett. She alerted police in that town, and an officer quickly spotted Despres.

In state court the next day, Despres told a judge that he is affiliated with NASA and was on his way to a Marine Corps base in Kansas at the time of his arrest.

After the case was transferred to federal court, Despres' attorney, Michael Andrews, questioned whether his client is mentally competent.

Fulton's friends in Minto, a village of 2,700 people, told the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal that he was a popular musician, a guitarist known as the "Chet Atkins of Minto" and a 2001 inductee in the Minto Country Music Wall of Fame.

Murder suspect back in Canada
Wanted in bloody double slaying in New Brunswick
By CP

Gregory Despres - Arrested in U.S.

FREDERICTON -- A New Brunswick man wanted in a bloody double murder was returned to Canada on an RCMP plane last night.

Gregory Despres was led off the aircraft and whisked swiftly into a waiting RCMP police car at the Fredericton airport.

The car was escorted into the city by two other police vehicles.

Several police officers in plain clothes accompanied Despres on his journey to Canada from a prison in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Despres has been in jail since he was arrested in Massachusetts April 27 in connection with the murders of his Minto, N.B., neighbours, Verna Decarie, 70, and her common-law husband, Frederick Fulton, 74, who was decapitated.

The U.S. State Department recently signed an extradition order to have Despres, 23, turned over to Canadian officials.

RCMP spokesman Const. Michel Mercier said that Despres would be brought to court to face charges shortly after his arrival.

"As soon as he arrives in Canada, he must go directly to court," he said.

The order was issued almost two months ago after a brief hearing in U.S. District Court in Boston.

A prosecutor told the extradition hearing that police matched blood on Despres's clothes to Fulton.

Despres did not fight extradition at the hearing, although his lawyer Michael Andrews has said he's concerned about his client's mental fitness to stand trial.

Despres entered the U.S. April 25 carrying a chainsaw and a bag full of weapons.

U.S. border authorities took the weapons and fingerprinted Despres, a naturalized U.S. citizen, but let him into the country after questioning him for three hours.

U.S. Customs officials and an RCMP officer at the border didn't yet know about the murders.

They knew he was supposed to be sentenced in Canada that day on an earlier assault conviction, but there was no warrant for his arrest. A day after the bodies of Fulton and Decarie were discovered, Despres was arrested by police in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts. The guy is back in Canada. Good riddance. Weirdo.

Haha, the joke that comes to mind is, "When they sent him over, the average IQ on both sides went up." Not that this has anything to do with anything, but it's 2 AM. Leave me alone. :shifty:

Gregory Allan Despres appears in court in Oromocto, N.B

Psychiatric evaluation ordered for N.B. suspect
Fri. Sep. 16 2005 11:32 PM
Canadian Press

OROMOCTO, N.B. — A New Brunswick man charged in the gruesome slaying of an elderly couple has finally appeared in a Canadian court to face murder charges and the family and friends of the victims.

Gregory Allan Despres, 23, was in court in Oromocto, N.B., on Friday but will have to undergo a psychiatric evaluation before answering first-degree murder charges in the bloody deaths of his former Minto, N.B., neighbours, Verna Decarie, 70, and her common-law husband, Frederick Fulton, 74.

The two were found dead in their Minto home in April. Both had been stabbed repeatedly, and Fulton had been decapitated.

"You are a pig," one of the spectators in the courtroom called out as Despres was led away.

Family and friends of Fulton and Decarie sobbed and gasped when they first saw Despres being led into the courtroom, his eyes glaring and his head shaved on the sides in Mohawk fashion.

Despres said nothing and sat impassively throughout his brief court appearance.

"I wish capital punishment was back because he doesn't deserve to live," said Millie Barton of Minto, N.B., a relative of Fulton's.

Despres was extradited to Canada from the United States on Thursday.

Despres entered the United States on April 25, the day before the bodies of Fulton and Decarie were discovered in Minto.

His entry into the United States has raised questions about border security since he arrived at the St. Stephen, N.B., and Calais, Me., border crossing carrying a variety of weapons, including a chainsaw, a homemade sword and an axe.

U.S. border authorities took the weapons and fingerprinted Despres, a naturalized U.S. citizen, but let him into the country after questioning him for three hours.

U.S. Customs officials and an RCMP officer at the border didn't yet know about the murders.

After the bodies were discovered on April 26, a warrant was issued for Despres' arrest and he was picked up in Massachusetts on April 27, where he was held until his return to New Brunswick this week.

Despres has been sent to a special facility at Dorchester, N.B., for a psychiatric assessment. The examination will determine his fitness to stand trial.

Randy Maillet, the lawyer acting for Despres in court on Friday, said he felt the assessment was needed as a result of conversations with Despres and his family.

Crown prosecutor Paul Hawkins agreed.

"An assessment would be beneficial," he said.

Despres is due back in court on Oct. 13.

A woman generaly shouldn't pick up hitchhikers. I am a big enough guy that I don't worry about it much. But if the guy is significantly bigger than me or looks creepy I won't give him a lift. Carrying a chainsaw (blood or no blood) immediately drops them into the creepy category though.
