Maxtor Corp. announced that its hard disk drives with 500GB capacity would be shipping in the Q3 this year for different types of systems. The introduction is likely to put Maxtor inline with its rivals from companies like Hitachi GST and Seagate, who have already been shipping 500GB hard drives for months.

Maxtor’s 3.5” hard disk drive with 500GB capacity and 7200rpm motors will be available for Serial ATA II (Serial ATA-300) as well as Parallel ATA-133 interfaces. Maxtor did not reveal any additional specs for the hard disk drives.

“We are committed to supporting the needs of all our customers around the world - from global manufacturers and regional distributors to individual consumers. Maxtor will continue to deliver advanced technologies, innovative products and solutions to both traditional and emerging markets,” stated Mike Wingert, Maxtor president and COO.

“The Maxtor 500GB hard drive underscores the company's emphasis on differentiation across all of its product lines, and reflects competitiveness within market segments demanding the highest capacity drives,” said David Reinsel, director of storage research at IDC.

So they are releasing a press release that they are late in releasing the 500 GB Drive?.. Cool

The question becomes how much? Arm and Leg is a little too much.

After all the problems/errors I had with the last Maxtor drive I owned, I will never buy another one of their products again. I've since bought 3 Samsung SpinSync drives and never had one problem.

I'm running out of space on my storage drive (80g) and wanting to upgrade but I don't think 500g is the amount I need; considerably less will do. :D

I have a problem with just about every companies drives.. If I stayed away from them because I got a lemon.. I wouldn't be able to have a computer :) .. Its hit or miss with most if not all companies.. Although some can be worse than others during certain manufacturing times

My two 160GB Maxtor hard drives are just too loud comparing to my other drives (Seagate and WD). I'm staying away from Maxtor for now.

I had a WD die on me and had to get going again so I bought a Maxtor which has been fine ever since. I RMAd the WD and am thinking about sticking the one they sent me in as a secondary drive. I have had it so long I do not remember which one was quieter. A defiecive drive can happen- no matter who is making it.

I think the real question is... whether or not these drives will provide any significant difference in r/w thoroughput.. being as ..just checked for SATA2 drives on their site... I believe this is their first SATA2 drive. I am curious how they'll keep up with those already available on the market.
I'd take 8x250GB drives anyday over 4x500GB drives anyday, unless of course, the 500GB drives were liike 15k rpm or something cool like that hehe.

I've had nothing but success with Maxtor drives. I have a 120GB, three 80's, and four 40's (all from staples and officedepot) and none of them are loud at all.

Just my luck I guess. My two Seagates have no problem whatsover and they comes with 5 years warranty. :D

i've had tons of drives over the years, in fact i'm still using an 8 gig drive i bought almost ten years ago in my server. The only drive thats ever failed on me was a maxtor that died last year, along with 80 gigs of my info :(
