This guy was giving away a free 1984 BMW on craigslist (http://sandiego.craigslist.org/zip/78861590.html) and I just wanted to ask a couple simple questions. I asked if it was auto or manual and if it was registered in-op. He writes me this response:

Out of over 140 email responses you are the only
person 'shopping' for a free vehicle. Amazing.
Worried it might cost you $50.00 to register? 'Free'
not good enough?
It's a silver/blue exterior-deep blue leather
interior, automatic transmission, garaged for 5 years
and operable; yet needing about $1000.00 worth of
front end suspension work (it telegraphs vibration
through the steering wheel at 60 mph)
All this is for naught; as it is now gone.
People never cease to amaze me

Now, am I the idiot here just wanting to know these questions, or am I right that he's a d*ck?

frankly, i would say youre the idiot, but he was a dick as well. he could have been nicer about it, but then again, im sure hes been getting tons of email.
dont take it personal,...plus, you dont really need a POS car thats free,...do you?

Yeah, but the guy said in his ad to email your questions. So I did. I would've taken it, as I have a family of mechanics, but the main thing I was wondering about was the registration status. I just didn't want to get something for free but then wind up having to pay $2000 or more in back registration. Sometimes free things just aren't worth the headache.

NOTHING is free...you know that, and yea, hes a dick

Actually, you had some good questions. The registration question was excellent. If the guy didn't register the car as in-op, then anyone taking custody or buying the car would be responsible for all of the past registration fees. That can be very expensive.

The attitude is typical for this part of the country though.

Ya the guy was a dick....and the registration question was a good one because maybe the car was stolen and thats why it was free. That would of been my first thought. But then again I'm suspicious by nature so maybe its just me.LOL

guy sounds like a hothead. i wouldn't take anything from him even for the low price of "free". sounds like he wanted to get rid of a heap of junk instead of paying to have it towed to the junkyard.

i wouldn't even waste my time emailing him a nasty response back.

and no.... i don't see where you are the idiot there. :gle:

Woops, too late! I already sent him a reply ripping into him. He just sent one back that said
Thanks for the great correspondence. I'm doing a piece
for the Reader. You have been most helpful.
Thanks again - no hard feelings.

Sigh. At least I feel a little better now though!

Oh, the Reader is a local magazine.
