i'm reading the article.. but not really getting it

whats the problem of having a pine oil in the pitchers glove?
is it like lotion?

cause i know if you throw baseballs all day long.. your skins keeps on getting rubbed against the wall of the ball.. there's bound to be some problem...

anyone mind telling me.. what the whole thing is all about

pine TAR. makes the hand tacky/sticky.

It's illegal to have any substance like that with you when you're pitching. Pine Tar, vasiline, fingernail file, sandpaper, etc... are all illegal.

Why? They change the way the ball physically is, or how it's thrown. With Pine Tar, you get a much better grip on the ball, which allows you to throw different, usually better, pitches.

so you can use the rosin bag which does essentially the same thing right?

Yes, but I think it does it to a FAR less degree. I think the main point of the rosin is to dry your hands off. I belive it does have a very minor tackiness to it, but nothing like pine tar.

I think it gives them some advantage in throwing the baseball like more grip to give it spin right? Like more control on the pitches versus sweaty hands.

so..
the angel pitcher had that PineTar in his glove, which helped him pitch better?

correct, or at least it was certainly meant to help him pitch better. I didn't see how he did.

When I used to bowl all the time and use rosin bags, I didn't feel like they gave me better grip on the ball, it just dried my hands (like Cubsfan said). I tend to think that's what pitchers use it for 'cause (again) I don't think it offers a better grip.

A funny note to this thread: anyone remember the one part in Major League (the 1st one, the only good one) where Chelsea Ross has Crisco smeared on his chest and Charlie Sheen (Rick Vaughn!) asks what it is and he tells him Crisco, he shows the other stuff on his body like vaseline, he mentions using snot, etc to get a better grip "lower his curve ball 5 inches". Disgusting but funny at the same time :D

he didn't pitch a single ball. He was caught before he could face a batter.

Either he didn't know, or he was going to defend his pitcher no matter what. Can't just throw the game! The fans would kill you! :)

Frank Robinson was pretty pissed off about it. He said he lost all respect for Scoscia.

yeah...there's something going on that we don't know about. Guillen, who was suspended by the angels last year, was really pissed off.

People are betting that Guillen told Robinson about Donnelley's glove and Scoscia said something to the effect that Guillen's worthless and a sell out or something.
