Anyone get sucked into this one?

Wang Chung did a pretty decent Nelly cover. :)

I watched the reruns when I was on watch at work.. Wasnt too bad.. on some of them.. Some of those guys are too old to sing now though :) forget which ones.. Vanilla Ice.. won the second one that I saw.

Wang Chung did really well with Nelly. I thought that was going to be a disaster, but once I got past an old white man singing the lyrics, they rocked :)

I didn't agree with Irene Cara winning. She has lost a lot of her range and power in her voice.

And somehow I missed last week and I really wanted to see it.

I just started watching it with the 2nd episode (Vanilla Ice - or as the announcer called hiim, "VanillER Ice; The Motels or something, Tommy Tutone, Haddaway, the Knack) and I'm sorta hooked. I still don't know what that 2nd Vaniller :) Ice song was about, but it was a decent hip hop song and I figured he'd win 'cause (admittingly) Ice Ice Baby is one of the best 1 hit wonder songs of all time. I couldn't believe that the Knack and Tommy Tutone butchered the lyrics of the songs they did; one did All The Small Things and the other did Are You Gonna Be My Girl and all I thought about the whole time was "man I can't believe they messed up the vocals". You'd think that they'd read over the lyrics before performing the song in front of millions of people so they don't look dumb on tv but...I guess not.

I missed the one last night though but as it's already been said, there will be reruns. They show reruns of NBC stuff on Bravo (that's how I got caught up on the Revelations show).

And slightly on the 80's topic - there will be the entire "Kid Stars of the 80s" series on VH1 tonight (4 or 5 hours worth - top 100), we've already got our DVR set to record it all. :thumb:

I saw the first episode but it competes with Beauty and the Geek. The first episode had Tiffany in it and she was bad. Cici Penison was great. That group who sang Tennessee won...I forgot the group.

HOLY CRAP! Arrested Development is back!?

I'm gathering from your posts that this is some kind of show that brings back one-hit wonders? What do they do, cover more recent songs?

Wow....Arrested Development. Go 'head, Mr. Wendel.

Yeah, they take five old bands/people and have them perform the one song that they are known for and then they have them cover one of the recent songs and somehow they pick a winner out of the group. Some of the bands are similiar enough to their past that it sounds like a decent cover, some just flat out don't have the ability anymore and just sound lame. I saw the first episode but it was sooooo bad that I don't watch it anymore. Hearing a 40-ish year old sining "I think we're alone now" was what did the show in for me.

Tiffiney is younger than I am; she isnt' 40'sh.

Howard Jones totally should have won last night.

She isn't... man... she looked like she was in her 40's.

I totally agree with that.

I loved him then and he did a great version of White Flag. He didn't try to do anything out of his range or ability that would make him look like an old doof and he rocked doing it.

Hmmm... I might have to consider watching it next week then... I'm a really big fan of Belinda Carlisle. Hope the show doesn't ruin that for me.

....ummmm, Boys to men? They weren't exactly a one-hit wonder. If The Source was doing reviews back then, Cooley High Harmony was five mics. ;)

it's not about one hit wonders. It's about old bands. Wang Chung and Howard jones weren't one hit wonders either, nor were the Motels.

Uh, not according to the website.

NBC says

Greg Kihn - Yay!
Glass Tiger - Boring
Baha Men - eh
Thelma Houston - could be cool, could be Irene Cara
And one to be determined later.

According the NBC online poll, this is what internet users thought:

Who did you want to win this week's show?
Cameo
14%
Howard Jones
32%
Irene Cara
13%
Sophie B. Hawkins
14%
Wang Chung
27%

Whisi is pretty much how I'd rate it, only I thought Sophie was high on something and danced like a 50 year old mom on crack.

As to Tiffany looking old - well, redheads do that, but mostly I think it was her outfit, which in my understanding, was due to being knocked up.

Well..my source was Greg Kihn. He's a morning radio DJ up in the Bay Area (KFOX). Maybe things have changed since Wednesday..i dunno. Apparently, according to him, the biggest probelm has been getting permission in time from record labels to allow him and others to cover songs. Most say no. That may have something to do with a line up change.

So what do these bands win? Is it a contest? Or is it just kinda like a Nostalgia Star Search?

20k gets donated to a charity of their choice

Charity? Nobody's seen Arrested Development in TEN YEARS...I'd be ok with them getting the money themselves. Why aren't they all competing for a comeback album or something?

A lot of the times, they are working on "something" and it's to promote.

Some are just enjoying life and I am sure they get some sort of pay or kickback for doing this.

So far, all are still holding concert dates. Some shouldn't be.

Yeah, it looking it to it, Night Ranger and Belinda dropped out because they couldn't get the songs they wanted. NBC has a list of songs that are approved. If you want to do something else, you need to bring it before the review board and the lawyers, which just shows you how inane copyright is.

Man, that sucks. I might've been willing to sit through another hour of it if Belinda Carlisle was going to perform but as for their current line-up... probably not worth my effort.
