Man Badly Burned Siphoning Gas From Car
Updated: Friday, Jun. 17, 2005 - 9:37 AM

GLEN BURNIE, Md. (AP) - An 82-year-old man was badly burned after trying to siphon gas from his car with an electric vacuum cleaner while the engine was running.

Fire officials said the vacuum cleaner caught fire and the man suffered first and second degree burns to 20 percent of his body Thursday, primarily to the left side of his abdomen, chest, hands and face. He was in stable condition at the Bayview Burn Center in Baltimore Thursday.

"The vacuum not withstanding, it's not advisable to siphon gas while the car is running," Lt. Russ Davies, spokesman for the county fire department, told The (Annapolis) Capital.

Davies said the fire could have spread to the gas tank, blowing up the entire vehicle. "It certainly would have been possible," he said.

The man had returned home from grocery shopping Wednesday evening and locked his keys inside the vehicle while it was still running, Davies said. Unable to get them out, the man left the car running in his driveway and went to bed. The next morning, the car was still running.

Determined to stop the car, the man pulled out an electric vacuum cleaner around 7:30 a.m. and attempted to drain the gas tank. The vacuum cleaner's electric motor caused a spark and ignited the gas, Davies said.

Authorities would not release the man's name. They said he lives with his son and daughter-in-law, who were not home at the time.

Well that wasn't smart. I guess it's too late to call a locksmith. Could have just broken the window or jimmy it open.

And before anyone starts... this 82 year old man was NOT IN FLORIDA :heh:

Maybe if he could've only remembered where the second set of keys to the car was in the house... he could've avoided this.

I wonder if it was a "wet/dry" vac? :heh:

But yeah... that just wasn't a very bright idea. :2far:

Man... poor dude. At that age, any major burn probably won't heal right.

Ya too bad he was so badly injured but he should of known better...especially at his age. Unless of course he had some kind of a seniors moment..they happen too. Hope he ends up ok.

I guess having a tow truck come out to unlock your door would be too much trouble.

I feel so badly for him. I'm sure he thought this was just fine. I can't even begin to imagine the pain involved there. I hope he makes it! :neartears

Could a mechanic recomend a way to stop the car without calling a locksmith? I've always wanted to try to stick a potato in the exaust.

That sucks. You have to give leeway to the older folk though... Maybe I would've disagreed last month, but after a trip around to see all the old folk in my family, I'm once again feeling much more forgiving to the geriatric crowd.
